Pro Gas Motorcycle Assoc., as Don Earll just couldn' t find the combina tion necessary to repeat the feat he accomplished in '88, and mana ged to fall in the sixth spot in the final standing last year. Bu t the Kawasaki racer rod e through a full field of Pro Gas bikes at the Pro Gas Bike Series ope ner a t Los Angeles County Raceway, where he defeated Dale Barber in the fina l round . Qualifyin g was led by J oe Savatgy on a 1990 Trac Dynamics-backed Suzuki a t 9.41 seconds, followed by Don Earll a t 9.47; Dave Ear ll was th ird at 9.48 a nd Barber was next with a 9.49. First ro u nd act ion incl uded Mark Mans field' s '84 Suzuki getti ng a free pass to ro und two when J ohn Larso n 's '87 Kawasaki broke. Dale Barber defeated Gary Fee; '89 cha mp Elva Earll (wife of eventual wmner Don Earll) beat her son , Dave Earll, 9.50/ 137.36 mph - 9.69/ 125.70 mph. .Du an e West ad vanced , after beating T om Erickson's Suzu ki then' Don Earll went to the second ro und with a 9.44, as Charl ie Fulks drew a red-light, Savatgy got a bye for hi s top qualifyin g efforts. The second round began wit h Don Ear ll runnin g an easy 9.65/ 139.30, as Mans field drew a red ligh t, Barber's 9.49/ 136.82 was eno ug h to stop Savat gy's 9.54/11 5.91 and Duane West wen t to the semi finals with h is Fulk s Ra cing-sponsored Suzuki. as Elva Earll ran too q uic k, losing with a 9.38/1 28.20. West could only ma nage a 10.22/1 34.04, bu t it was sti ll good enough for the win. Bar ber began the semis with a 9.47/1 37.02 to get aro und West, recordi ng a 9.70/ 137.52. Don Earll ran his T rac Dynamics/ Cycle T u ne of Fresno -backed Kawasaki to a 9.37/ 141.13 bye run to the final. Don Earll practically won the titl e race a t the starting line, recording a super b .413 reaction time to Barber's respectabl e .491 reaction tim e. Earll got th e win with a 9.59/ 119.61, as Barber's Gatlin Racin.s/ AP ElTrac Dynamics-backed Kawasaki hesitated on the pass and recorded a 9.76/1 33.91 for the runnerup spot. Possibly one of th e most impressive motorcycle racers in sou thern California over the pas t year has been Gary Stoffer of North Holl ywood, California. Stoffer won the Super Gas when he beat T ony Broussard in the final round 10.51/1 19.54 - 10.64/1 24.53. In th e sem i finals, Broussard defeated Aub rey Eten, wh ile Stoffer' s n um ber on e qualifying (10.41 seconds), Suzuki got a bye run. Lathrop wins Filthy PUp . Baker Motorcycle Clu b Off-Road Series. The Bellin gham area has been subjected to more than its share of moisture. some of it frozen. The event was nearly canceled because of excessive rai n , snow an d mu d slides which blocked access to the starting p its. The race featured four Wash ington ISDE riders , all were in the Expert A class and started in the first wave. Scot Drafs got the holeshot un til he slid out and Lathrop took the lead. At the punch barrels, it was La throp, Jason Dahners, Sha ne Kearn s, Larry Bin sches and David Rh odes ro unding ou t the top five. . In the second loop , Lathrop took a side trip into the woods and Dahners took the lead. with Rh oades in third. Lathrop regained the lead in lap three with Rhodes 30 seconds back and Dahners down b y two min utes. The four th time around the nine-mile course had La throp with a seven minute lead o n Rh odes who was riding a minute ahead of Jaso~ Dah ners, T he race was shortened from three to two hour s, as the course was deteriora tin g rapidly an d La throp finished the fifth and final lap with a comfortab le lead on Dahners, who had gotten around Rhodes, dropp in g him to third. Shane Kearn s and Ken Leard rounded out the top five. Lyle Duron so topped the Over 35 class by a wide margin. Duron so said, "This is my kind of run. " David Scott, from Canada, rode his 125 Yam aha to fir st pl ace in the 200cc A Expert class. Ra ndy Stoneman finished first in the Open B; T om Simpson, first 200cc B; Perry T on sguard, the Sports ma n winner ' Ron Morgenthaler, Super Senio r and Darreil Gray topped the C class. One hu ndred and thir tyseven riders sign ed up with 21 una ble to fini sh. La throp gra bbed second place on the start and said the course was hard, slick and slim y. .
