MAR 3 odney Farris started off th e new year right on his new Gardner Racing/Lynch Transportationspo nso red, Bill Wiebler-tuned HarleyDavidson XR750 as he led every lap of the E.C. Enterprises-promoted half mile at Jax Ra ceways. Connecti cut's J ason Fletch er ran away with the Junior main, and young Jerem y Lucy made his tr ip from Virginia worthwhile by coming out o n top of his first professional race in the Pro-Am main. Harl ey -Davidson 's Chris Carr topped th e 30 o ther expe rts in ti me trials, turnin g the D-shaped oval at 20.860 seconds. ESP Racing 's Dan Ingram was second wi th a 21.238 lap and Fletcher was th e quickest junior at 21.669, whi ch was the sixth fastest tim e overall. T he 34 Pro -Am riders on hand were divided into four heats with wins goi ng to L ucy, G len Bro wn , Pat Buchanan and Kirk Hayes. R 34 The Junior class was the largest with 42 riders split into five heats. Fletcher, Rob Maj eski, Conrad Parshall, Kris Kiser and Clint Vahsholtz were the winners. Semis were run in th e Pro-Am and Junior classes with the top six in each moving to the mains. The first Pro-Am semi was led all the way by Lucy with Mike Dillon and Kyle Long locked in a battle o ver second. Long took over with two laps left but co uldn 't gain on Lu cy. The second Pro-Am semi was an excelle nt race as Pat Buchanan and Bret Beyer held a race-long war over the lead. Beyer nipped Buchanan at the finish line for the win. The first Junior semi had a little of everyt h ing. Brian T ill son ju mped int o the lead with pole-sitt er Maj eski mired deep in the pack. T ony Donahue, Paul Pol hemus and Kiser were on Tillson's back wheel. Donah ue took over the lead just past the halfway p oi nt. T illson maintained secon d while Vahsholtz charged into third. With two laps remaining Vahsholtz's Ro tax let go , dumping oil down the back straight. On the last lap Donah ue saw his win disappear as he hit the oi l and fell. In the shake-up that followed Majeski ended u p second be hind Tillson. Kiser, Polh em us, Reeves and Du H aime followed into the main. The second Junior semi was anticlimactic as Fletcher q uickl y overcame a bad start and pulled away. Pa t Behrle held off AI Eadie until the last lap , then barely beat Conrad Parshall for third . Chris Carr easily -won the first Expert heat over Rodney Farris, who had worked his way up through the field. Steve Aseltine led Craig Estelle, Dave Hebb, Recil Hart and Keith Day home for third. The second heat got off to a neartragic start as George Roeder unloaded exi ti ng tum four o n the first lap, leaving Tom Majeski and Steve Burkholder nowhere to go. The race was immediately red-flagged. Burkholder was shaken but able to continue, Roeder retired to th e pits, but Majeski had to be air-lifted out with head inj uries. The restart belonged to Dan Ingram as he held close to a full straight lead. Don Estep moved by Burkholder to take second. Gary Davis too k the last transfer spot over Martin La voie and Rex Fisher. The third heat saw Ra ndy Texter ho ldi ng off Erik Graybeal af ter polesitter Larry Pegram fell down on the front straight. Pegram was up quickly and gave chase but had too much ground to make up and was eli minated from the program. Aaron Hill led Dan McD onnell , Keith Jacobsen and Randy Roose for third. A winner-take-all dash for cash for the six fastest expert qualifiers was held. Chris Carr took the $300 back to ' his van after Farris slipped down and Ingram could only stay close. The Pro-Am 'mai n was an extremely tight, three-way race with Buchanan, Beyer, and Lucy constantly making a run at o ne another. Buchanan led every lap but the last as a trip off the groove dropped him to third behind Lucy and Beyer. Kyle L ong too k fourth over Mike Dillon and Sh awn McNary . Fletcher ra n u ncontested in the Junior main. Kiser held off a fastclosing Rob Majeski for second. A short dista n ce back Al Eadie led Conrad Parshall and Speedy Kell to the finish . Rodney Farris blasted off the line to lead the Expert main with In gram, Carr, H ill and Texter in tow. Carr moved past Ingram and slowly closed on Farris. Ingram held a secure third well ahead of Hill, Aseltine and Texter. Carr made a strong run on the last lap bu t it fell j ust short. Ingram was alone in third wi th Aselti ne leading H ill, Estelle, Texter, Estep , McDonnell and Davis to the fini sh .
