Jim Holley (1) and Mike Craig battled in their heat race with Craig eventually prevailing. Craig finished third in the main and picked up the series points lead. Larry Brooks (37) chased Ryan Hughes (7) for several laps during the early portion of the final. At one point Brooks had the lead but dropped to fifth behind Dymond. Micky Dymond (24) had a tough night and lost the series points lead after finishing . fourth in the main. He is now tied with defending champ Holley for fourth. McGrath flies to San Diego win By Ken Faught SANDIEGO, CA, FEB. 24. ighteen-year-old Jeremy McGrath wrapped up his second straight 250cc Ultracross win after an amazing come-from-behind ride at San Diego 's Jack Murphy Stadium. Th e victory in front of 43,162 spectators backed up the Sun City , California, rider's Anaheim Stadium U1tracro ss win . " I didn't know if I cou ld win this one ," McGrath said shortly after the main event. " I knew it would be tough becaus e there were so many good riders ahead of me." . . McGrath, however, wasn 't the only on e who came out ahead. Mike Craig climbed from fifth in the series point standings to take the lead in the ninerace series, ahead of McGrath. Twotime l25cc National Champion Micky Dymond, who had the point lead coming into San Diego, dropped several positions into a tie with Jim Holley for fourth. Dymond set the pace in timed practice by posting a 35.254-second lap. Craig was second quickest with a 35.695, with Mike Young, Hughes E 20 a nd McGrath completing th e five fastest times of the 39 riders to qualify. Ryan Carlisle started the first heat race by grabbing the holeshot from the fourth row after double jumping past the seven riders who stood in his way. Carlisle led the way for a few laps until. McGrath and Young shoved their way through the field after the inverted start and took over the top two positions. Carlisle dropped to third. McGrath and Young slowly opened up a small cushion and waged an allout war , swapping the lead several times, with each rider holding down the number one position for nearly the same amount of time. When it was over, Yamaha-mounted Young rowly edged out McGrath, who was followed by Carlisle, Larry Brooks and Mark Lang. Dymond, who tangled with Frankie Brundage on lap two , finished eighth. Rich Truchinski came from the front row in the second heat race to lead for a lap, but was quickly overtaken by defending Ultracross Cham- nar"
