Jeff Blanchard (147) to pped 24 other riders for the overall victory in
the 125cc Beginner class at Woodland M otocro ss Park .
Hawthorne hangs on
at Odessa Arenacross
By Vince Guy, Jr.
ODESSA , TX, JAN 12-1 3
Dennis Hawthorne's double
class victories in round five of
the USA Arenacross Series
insured his overall points lead
despite losing to teammat e T erry
T inney in the 125cc class a nd J ason
Upshaw in th e 250cc class, in ro und
six at Od essa.
In th e 125cc main event o n Friday
nigh t, J ason Langford grabbed the
holeshot ahea d or H awthorne a nd
Clay Hoenshell. H awth orn e sli pped
by the Yama ha rid er on the firs t la p
and lept to a four-second lead early
in the race. Beh ind Langford, T erry
T inney mo ved in to fourth, wh ile
Brian McGary p ull ed with th e lead ers from a back row start . McG ary
looked to be in th e h um un ti l
colliding wi th Hea th Kirkland over
the tri pl es, knock ing hi m off th e pace
and o u t of the race.
Tin ney, meanwhile, pu lled in to
third p lace a nd was applying pressure on Langford for seco nd. T he
two riders weaved through traffic
and were never more than a second
apart for the last half of the race.
At th e end Haw thorne took the
checkers six seconds ahead of Tinney, who took advan tage of a la pper
in the last tu rn to pull alongs ide
La ngford and edge h im out for
second by a wheel.
At the start of the 250cc main
H oen shell g ra bbed the h ol esh o t
from the outside but slowed co nsi dera bly afte r clea ring the doubles
ahead of th e pack.
" I heard some thi ng go 'cl un k' in
my forks," sai d H oe nshell. "T he
rebo und adjustm ent bolt came loo se.
After that I just lost all con fidence
-and held on for what I could."
Langford took the lead by clearing
the triples wh en H oenshell singled
th e jumps. Then Hawthorne pulled
in behind Langford and sto le the
lead with an inside pass. Upshaw
then pulled to within striking distance of the two and pulled into
second after Langford bobbled on the
fifth lap and slipped to fourth behind
a struggling Hoenshell.
By then lappers had allowed
Hawthorne to stretch his lead to four
seco nds and he would never be
cha llenged again. Langford capitalized on la pped traffic to grab third
back from H oenshell.
On Saturday night th e riders lined
up for the start of the first 125cc
main. Tinney jumped into the earl y
lead with Hawthorne on his rear
fender. La ngford held th ird ahead of
Kirkland. Going into the second turn
H awthorne dove to th e insi de of the
bowl turn and briefly took th e lead
until T inney returned th e favor in
the next turn and made his pass stick.
" I just decid ed I didn 't want to
.p la y with Dennis tonight," said
Tinney. " Aft er h e (H aw t h o rne)
passed me, I knew I had to pa ss him
ba ck right awa y, so I got h im in the
next turn. My bik e is running grea t,
so all I had to wo rry abo ut was
winning."
Once T inney retoo k th e lead the
four from-runners set a pace that
carried th em well ahead of th e rest
of th e field and into la p ped traffic
early in th e race . T inney ra n a
mistake-free. race desp ite cons tan t
pr essu re from H awthorn e a nd held
on for the win a second ahead of his
teammate.
In th e 250cc ma in event H awth orne jumped in to the lead early
a nd loo ked to be in lin e for his seco nd
250cc win of the weekend. Su dden ly,
U pshaw kicked in the afterburner
and ma de a move on McGary for
second p lace. By the end of th e next
lap Upshaw made ground on H awthorne and block-passed h im com ing
ou t of th e sweeper.
On th e next lap Hawthorn e
jumped th e triples a nd retook th e
lead.
Upshaw reta liated with a p ictureperfect block -pass on the next la p
and set a pace through lapped traffi c
that bested the rest of the field by
a second per lap.
Wh ile Upshaw pulled away for th e
win , Tinney sneaked up beh ind
Hawthorne a nd cha llenged him for
third. T inney lept over the tri p les
.nto secon d by lin ing hi mse l£ up
insi de of Hawthorne for th e next
turn and making th e pass stick.
Immediatel y afte r T in ney's pass,
Hawthorne tagged a hay bale a nd
went down but got up and held 0010
th ird place at the checkered flag .
