Hea t race win ners Buddy Ant u nez a nd H onda privateer rider Michael J on es were sixth and 12th. . Davis led th e race for th e firs t five laps of th e IS-lap race. But Den ny Stephenson a nd Michael Cra ig were o n the move; Step henson started th e mo to in seventh and Craig around 10th. By th e 10th lap, Step henson and Craig had moved into seco nd and third, respectiv ely, and were dogging the leader, Emig. On th e 12th lap , Stephenso n nearl y pulled alo ngside Emig and was looking to ma ke a pa ss as they a pp roached a triple ju mp . At the last seco nd, Step henson decided to doubl e the jumps inste ad of tr ip lin g th em, a nd in doing so landed a little short . .T he awkwa rd lan ding forced Stephen son to swerve across the track a nd into Craig's pa th, who was well into clearing th e trip les. As Craig came down; he clipped Stephen son 's shoulder and bot h riders cra shed hard; both were slow getting to their feet. Stephenson . managed to fin ish the race, while Craig walk ed back to th e pits. This ga ve Em ig a com ma ndi ng lead for th e remain ing three laps a nd he held it to win.
