Florida Winter AMA Series: Round 3 Coleman, McElroy dazzle Dade City By Mike and A nne Adair DADE CITY , FL, JAN. 13-14 Chri s Coleman an d Brian McElroy dazzled the competition a t Dade City Motorcycle Raceway as each swep t a p air of Pro m o tos in the third round of the Florida Winter AMA Motocross Series. Ra n dy Yoho's Dade City Motorcycle Raceway provided three da ys of good hospitality 10 beginning with a Pro/Am su percro ss on Friday under the lights. Local favorite Brian McElroy gave hi s fan s a rea son to chee r with impressive rides in both 250cc Pro motos. The Suzuki mou nted, Gear/ WKRba cked privat eer sa id, " Woody Kyle built a fast mot or. It go t me to th e first turn quickly a nd th en it was up to me to stay th ere." McEl ro y's performance vaulted him a hea d o f Fred Andrews in th e serie s point ch ase. The first 125cc Pro moto open ed with a stro ng lead by Barry Car sten, foll ow ed by Jay Mann, Chad Montero , J er ry Seip, Pat Barton and David Gaylord. Coleman , J ero m ey Buehl and David Beckington had to charge back through the pack aft er m edi ocre starts. Mann tried a n ea rly downhill pass, but Car sten held his line a nd Mann had to fall back. Co leman ha d moved lip to third by la p three and th e duel co ntin ued for first. H iP o int/M ontgomerville Cycle/ ·A r a i /Ca rr s /Bo ye sen -s pon s ored Carsten said, "Mann got by me, but bobbled a nd I got him back." Man n 's Barrs-sp onsored Kawasaki took th e lead o n lap eig h t a n d co n tro lled th e tempo for three rotations before Coleman took the win. Mann said, "Col eman is go od in traff ic. I co u ldn' t get pastlappers th e way he co u ld an d h e ga ine d o n me by carefu ll y pi cking th em off," Co lem an added, " I cau gh t Jay before a jump. H e came bac k a longside, but I had a better line a nd held th e lead ," Carsten locked up third ahead o f Buehl and Beckington. . In mot o two , Col em an burned the p ack off th e ga te and roosted all th e, way for th e win: " Bobby -Ba rr and Mar k Decandia set up a fast bike, and Pow ermist Fu el. has always worked well for me," said Co leman. " My girl Sharon Graham ca me down for today 's race and this win is h er birthday present. " In th e battle for second, Carsten led Jim Ch esser, Mik e Brown and Paul Cornell in th e ea r ly laps. Carsten prevailed in second with Manri and Buehl moving up to finish third and fourth . Carsten, who is n ow engaged to hi s longtime girlfriend T amm y Denny said, " This is my first ride on the '90 Suzuki. It ha s a really goo d motor, but I am still using m y '89 sh oc k until we get th e new o ne fig u red o u t." T odd Deh oop returned to ac tion with a stro ng 250cc moto hol esh ot a hea d o f Brian McElroy a nd J eff Frisz. Ge ne Na urnec, wh o was 19th o n lap one, rode hard a nd closed on DeH oop to ta lly a third a t the end . Naumec sai d, '" just tried to hol d the pa ce. A heat wave hit me a t th e midmark, but I got a seco nd wind and almost ca ugh t DeHoop a t the end ." Mot o 'two saw McElroy leading Frisz, Naumec an d J ohn Dowd, with An drews and Peterson on th e gas . Andrews turned up th e wic k on hi s Pro C irc u it/Answer/ Hom bre InternationallSm ith /RK Chain/ Acerb isba cked Suzuki an d pa ssed Fr isz and set up McEl ro y for a pass o n lap seven. Andrews pi cked a hot lin e and took th e lead o n la p eigh t, ' b u t McElroy wa s not to be denied. On th e next go aro u nd , McElro y and An dre ws j amm ed over a ju m p , a lmost entwined , landed hard on the trac k wi th McE lroy emerging on top. McElroy said, " I shot to th e inside an d tried to o u tsma rt Andrews . He did n ot tak e th e fake a nd we en ded up in th e same line." Andrews, who settled for second overall said, "T h is is it for me in Florida. We load u p and h ead west to catch th e early supercrosses." Suzuki Canada/Dunl op/Ceets/ NGK-ba cked 'Pederson, who took a moto third, said, " I finally kept my head o ut of the sand in this moto. John Dowd was hard to pass on this surface. H e's a master in th e sa nd," Dowd, a fter endin g third overall added , " I was riding with a bruised thigh. I wore my good leg out th o ugh and had to sit down a lot. When Pederson ca u gh t me, I thought th at it' wa s Naumec. ' Earl Ma y put in his best rid e of th e seri es, to pass Dehoop for fifth overall. Am at eurclean records were soi led a t Dad e City, a n d class standings were sh u ffled a t ra ndom. Only Mini jocks R ic k y Carmichael, Kev in Windham and Ezra L usk, and 250cc C rid er Brian Ab el esca ped unscathed. TX 10 Clothing/W KR-backed Gary Paul dramatically won both 125 and 250cc Expert classes and vau lted into both class leads.
