The route led to a chec kpoint in Search ligh t, Nevada, and the n sp lit, allowing tired ri ders LO head in on the h igh wa y while energetic ride rs put in a finis hing burst along a challe nging po le-lined road. T he lights of Las Vegas were a welcome sig ht after two days a nd almos t 450 mi les in th e saddle , but they also brought a touch of sadness. The fun was over a nd everyone wou ld have to wait until next year to ride LAto- Barstow-to-Vegas again. For the riders who co mpleted th e co urse, th ere was the satisfaction of a job well done a nd a host of prizes that ra nge d from plaques for hi gh a nd low hands on th e poker and board ' ga mes p la yed alo ng the way, to a drawing for a comp lete set of rid ing gea r donat ed by Am eri can H onda. There were prizes for the o ldes t and younge st rid ers, for th e o ldes t bi ke (a 1949 BSA fla thead wi th no suspens ion ), a nd for the smallest bike, wh ich wen t to th e DT50 pilo ted by Dirt R ider magazine's Ka rel Kra mer. . There was even som e consola tion for riders wh o didn 't com plete the co urse. J oseph O 'Su llivan received a h a rd -luck awa rd for hi s broken co lla rbo ne a nd Ben Roeder, wh o pi loted th e 250cc inj a, walked a way with a plaque for the mos t un usual bik e, but had no bike LO go with it. " I almost mad e it, " Roeder sai d. " An engine mo unting bolt bac ked o u t com p letely (near th e finish ) and the frame sna pped. It bro ke th e bike in half and that was it, " I really wanted LO ride th e event a nd a ll I ha d was my race bike," sa id Roed er, who is a regular o n the tra ck a t Sears Point in nort hern Ca li for ni a . " It was that o r my H onda Hurricane, so I put d ua l sport tires o n the Nin ja a nd went ou t there." Roeder's first du al sport ride was p lagu ed by what he described as " mi rror diffi cu lti es. I sta rte d o ut runn in g wa ter into the ca rb but I fixed tha t, then I go t a lea k in my gas tan k. I had to carry gas with me a nd sto p every 20 to 25 m iles to po ur some more in . T he wh o le bike was vibratin g a pa rt by the end of the ride." , But desp ite his prob lem s, Roeder p lans to be back next year. " It was a grea t experience," he sa id , " R uining the bi ke pro bab ly wasn 't worth it bu t it was so much fun that I'd do it again . I'll be back next year, may be with the H urrica ne.
