Bu t th e rain had aba ted, a nd with a dry line appearing, Goddard began to charge, a s those on wet tires bega n to falter. Goddard climbed from 10th o n lap 17 to sixth by lap 20, a n d was up to second four laps la ter. Meanwhi le, visitors to the pits for tir e cha nges included Campbell, -Merkel a n d Dow son , th eir hopes o f a ro strum fin ish dashed.
