That I added a w heel to our cus tomary pa ir, and go t ano ther view of our lives. Goodbye Daylight-Saving T im e and H ello H all oween! It was th e fin al end of su m me r and an occasion for brisk autumn rides, a season of Jack -O-Lanterns and Costumes and H om ecom ing Games. I rode m y new red H arley in my high school's hal ftime parade, rig ht behind another alum driving an old sidecar. Ch eers wen t up f or m y 90's gem and his prewar out fit, a '38 military HD that R ust y fo und in South America. It was li ke new again now and all Blue&- Wh ite. It caught th e civilian eye th ere and gave motorcycles m ore resp ect. A nd made m e dream of fields of th ree-wheelers. T hen - po o]! N ext day I was under oaks and sycamores way up in Griffi th Park, w here that dream came to life. The grass was literally covered with bikes and th eir sidecars - it was th e largest and oldest rally for them in th e w ho le U.S. A collector's paradise refl ected in a Zundapp 's tan k chrome! Th ere were Watson ians, and classic old Steibs with stylish po lished ribs and swee p ing French curves. And all sorts of cus tom hacks staggering th e im agi nation. Doug Bingh am was th e rally ch ief in his nift y brimmed hat, and we sat an d yak ke d on sidecars till th e sun fell in to the h ills. The even ing befo re they'd shown old bik e movies and talk ed ·way p ast m idn ight over cam pfi res. It was like a wago n train rest ing before headin ' out again . Fam il ies and distance riders who think no thing of going coast-to-coas t. A nd soon th e park w as em p ty , save for a few w ho cou ldn't leave, w ho wanted to keep the eve n t al ive as lon g as th ey possibly could. We conversed on about those inevitable rides through the coming rain s, Greg and Pam and I did. We guessed on w hat th is win ter w ill bring, and mused about th e Big Seaso n agai n - next sum me r and its BM W Na tion al and 50th Year of Surgis. Oh, we're going. W e'll do it all. And th e thought of it so me how brought th at summer of '90 closer. Bingha m 's eyes watched one of th e last sidecars go by. " W herever you point it," said Doug, " it goes ."
