The California Desert Pl an of 1980 wa s supposed to be a compro mise to allow an expandable pl an for all users. Special places were set aside to allow for purely sceni c usage, en viro n me nta l protection, a nd for ope n motorized recreation. The motorcycling pl aces that are left are not bei ng expanded as per th e plan, but are in jeopardy of being decreased . In recent years, this has effec tively put th e motorcycling comm unity in a situa tion to be on display in a very few contained areas of high intensity use. It scar es me to see th is situation evolving. If yo u still want to ride on public lands, don 't give.$ 1 for a lousy raffle. Step up to the program and do wi thout new tires or boots. I am a WERA offi cia l and for the last half of the season I did the m inute boards for Gordon. What made it so much fun was Gordon 's sense of humor. You co uld always co unt on him sa ying so meth ing to make everyone laugh. His stories were always so funny th ey made you cry from laughing so hard. Well, I'm still crying, only this time it is because r won 't hear those funny stories anymore. At least I have sorne . in my heart to keep la ugh ing abou t. I'm sure I speak for allthe WE RA officials in sayi ng that Gordon will be greatly miss ed no t only a t the Grand National Finals but always. My deepest sympathy goes out to Gordon's famil y. .
