OCT. 22 Stan Capps tu rn ed in four impressive rides to claim two class victories at th e Dick Mann Vintage Dirt Bike Rall y 24 a t Sand hi ll Ra nch. Capps wa lked a way wi th first-p lace tro ph ies in the 500cc a nd Vet Amateur ra n ks, riding hi s CZ to a perfect I-I sco re in both classes. Capps wasn 't th e on ly two-class winn er o f the day as But ch Co chra n a lso picked up two wins in the Open Twi n a nd Vet Expert classes . Other wi n ners o n th e day were Rod Kirkbride , who to pped th e 125cc No vice class and Ma tt H ilgen berg, who too k home th e win in a ha rd -fough t 500cc Premi er Expert battle. T h is was the si xth a n n ua l Vin tage Dirt Bike Rall y a nd the more tha n 200 riders in a tte nda nce were treated to excellent wea the r a nd trac k co nd itio ns. Rain th e previous da y left the tra ck wet , but not muddy , and partly-cloudy skies and comfortable temperatures kept the track dust-free th e who le day . As usua l,some big nam es from th e past were in attendance a t this year's race, includi ng 1982 500cc World MX Ch ampion Brad La ckey, wh o was seen wa ndering th ro ugh the pits through out th e da y, as well as Jim Po mero y, wh o rode a "Ji m Pomeroy Rep lica " Bultaco to a win in th e seco nd Vet Expert class mot o , " T his is grea t. I hav en't raced in quit e a while , but thi s reall y rekind led m y en th us ias m," sa id Po mero y. " It was just so mu ch fu n, I' m rea lly p umped. It 's just like when I sta rted racing; everybo dy seems to help eac h other o u t and j ust hav e a good tim e, no o ne wa lks aroun d th e p its wit h an a ttit ud e." In the first Vet Ama teur class mo ta , Capps powered hi s CZ up th e start h ill in front o f the 20-rider pack and b y th e time th ey ro u nded th e Sturn at the to p a nd head ed for th e big downhill, he had a lready p ut so me di stance o n the field. Beh ind the lead er, Marty Lukaszewski had worked his wa y into seco nd and held it a ll th e way to the chec kers. Robert Dora n, Mik e Aiki n s and P e te r Cruttende n ro u nded o ut the tap-five slo ts. T he seco nd mota saw Capps a nd Lukaszewski again out front , but th is tim e th e leaders were locked in a batt le for the lead. Through the first part of the race the tap two stayed close, but Lukaszweski event ua lly got by Capps to take the lead . Capps rem ained within str iking dista nce of L ukasz ewski, and o n the last la p he mad e his mov e, slip ping by to ia ke the mo ta a nd overa ll wins. Lukasz ewski settled fo r seco nd overa ll wit h a 2-2 score, whi le Maico pi lot Dor an wrap ped u p thi rd overa ll with a third in mota two. Aikins too k a n o t her fou rth to claim fou rth overa ll , whi le CZ-mounted Larry Cer ini too k fifth overall with a n 85 tall y. Capps blasted to a nothe r pa ir of mo to wi ns in the 500cc Amateur clas s, clai m ing the overa ll win ahead o f Brian Dickey, wh o too k second overa ll by fini shi ng seco nd in both mo te s. Doran picked u p a nother th ird- place finis h o n th e da y by turn in g in a no ther 3-3 score in this class, CZ rider Kevin Akrey and BSA Jamie Hacking (268) and Leonard Bennick raced closely for two laps in 125cc B action at Muddy Creek until Hacking got away for the w in. pilot Gary 'Moore finished fourth and fifth overall , respe ctively. T he 500cc Pr emi er class had o ne of the biggest fields ever a t Sa nd hi ll Ran ch , and featured some o f the closes t raci ng o f the da y. As the pack came down th e hill for the first tim e Peter Ford had his BSA Gold Star in th e lea d, w h i le H il g enber g ja m med h is Speed & SportlTsuba kil Rock Oi l/Motion Pro-backed R ickman T riumph past Dick Man n to clai m seco nd. H ilgenberg sha do wed Fo rd through la p two , th en slipped by to cla im the lead; Mann also go t by Ford not long af ter th a t a nd began to close in on H ilgen berg. Ma n n cha llenged H ilgenberg for the lead on la p th ree, but as both riders went into a turn side by side , th ey co llide d. T hey both stayed upright, but Mann ca me a way with the lead . Mann put a few bik elen gths on Hilgenberg, wh o had Fo rd close beh ind him. Near the end of la p four, Ma n n 's bike sp u ttered to a ha lt and both Hi lgenber g and Ford nearly ran int o the back of Ma n n before he made it to th e sid e o f the track. With Ma nn o u t of the race , Hilgenberg motored to the win a hea d of Ford, Buck Murph y, who had sta lled th e engine off the sta rt , and En glish vin tage racer Adria n Moss. In the seco nd mot o , Mann wres tled th e lead away from a battling Ford and H ilgenberg early in th e race a nd pulled ou t to a slig h t lead. With Mann o u t front. H il genberg a nd Fo rd had a n intense ba ttle over seco nd, whi ch ended when th e two rid ers made contac t in a tight. righ than d tu rn. Both riders were able to stay on two whee ls, bu t Ford went o ff the tra ck, a llowing Murp h y to close in. Mu rphy then passed Ford to ma ke it a tigh t battle for seco nd p lace. Mann was ma in taini ng a steady lea d , w hi le Hil g enber g had hi s hands full wi th 1970s motocross sta r Mu rphy, who was rid ing aSpeed & Spo rt-prep ped , Ro d Lake-o wned Cheney BSA Go ld Sta r. Mu rph y turned u p the heat o n Hi lgenberg, b u t H ilgenberg was able to fight him o ff for two laps.
