Six teen riders anended m e first even t at th e base of th e Lake Perri s Dam. Each of th e 15 raced five heat races. Alter th e heat s, th e top (our in points ca me back for th e rour. lap · Ch ampionship evenL . Things sta rted rough wh en veter3n Wa yne Manchester went down with Mik e Reed in round one. Reed wa lked a way from the turn o ne tangle. but 38·year-old Manch ester was o u t for th e night with a slig ht shoulder separatio n. The top riders in th e ear ly heaats were rookie jerry Black and Cos ta Mesa 's j ason Ch ism . Both en lered round four undefeat ed. Black , riding a Weslak e, dominat ed th e competi tio n through th e first th ree rounds. He did th e same in round lour a nd picked up his fourth·straight win. Chism was not as fortunate. He got a poor start wh en his hea t left th e line and co u ld never advan ce funhern than third. Going iilto th e fifth and final round, Black had en ough points to make th e main. All Chism had to do was linish th ird to be in a ti ~ for th e final spot in th e ma in. He nev ~r got that far.
