ROSAMOND, CA, I After a lo ng absen ce from his ho me track, 17year-old Tommy Lynch let the field kn ow his pre senc e by winning the WERA-sanctioned Formula USA, B Superstock and B Superbike ra ces at W illow Springs Internationa l Raceway. Lynch , rid in g Jamie James' AMA Superb ike Championship-winning Yoshimura. Suzuki GSXR750, took the lead a t the start of the featured Formula USA race, followed by Su zuk i-m ounted Lee Shierts and Kent Kunitsugu , wh o was competing in hi s first race after moving up from a 600 to a lOOOcc Yamaha. For 5th Avenue Seluer's Chuck Graves, th e race was over at me star t, as he tagged another rider and dr opped th e bik e. By th e time Graves p ick ed up ,he fallen machine and got permission from a com erworker to co ntin ue, the leaders were co ming down the hill from turn four. Had Graves placed th ird o r beuer he would have won th e series championship. but now he'd have to be content with a lackluster fini sh . As th e race progressed, Shierts mad e a stab a t th e lead, successfully go ing under Lynch in turn o ne. Sh ortly th ereafter, Lyn ch mad e the same move on Shierts that he had mad e o n him to rega in h is lead spo t. In ,h e end, i, was Lynch, spo nsored by Yoshimura, Mot ul , The Wax Shop, ICRT Michelin, Kushitani, Fox. Shoei a nd Ono Sokki, who crossed th e finish line first with Sh ierts second a nd Burke third. As the gree n flag dropped, Lynch go t th e holeshot, while Van ce &: H ines' Pete Ca rro ll , Dean Mizdal and Chuck Graves ran seco nd, th ird and fourth, respectively. Co m ing down the front straigh t. Graves put th e mo ve o n Mizdal. Next , he set hi s sigh ts on Carroll in seco nd pos itio n , and a coup le of laps lat er made a pict ure-pe rfect pass. Graves was rid in g a bike that ha d been hastil y repaired a fter hIS truck a nd trailer overt ur ned while tra veling to a race , and he d id quite well consideri ng that it had bent forks and swi ngarm. It was a hard-earned victory a fter a three-way ballle betw een Stanfield, Tim Newell and Dwan e Miinch. Stanfield said he rod e 10 keep from cras hing and speed was nOl what was needed beca use it was a tight a nd technical co urse. The three leaders were in co ns ta nt traffic as th ey diced for 10 laps aro und th e four·mi le course. Miin ch led laps four 'hrough eigh' but his hopes for a first -ever o vera ll win were crushed when h is Honda went dow n in the rocks and Sta nfield a nd Newe ll went by. Newe ll was aw arded first place Expert and Mii nch finished in second p lace. ATKmounted Chris Caplinger ran co nsisten tly behind the leaders for the who le two hours, but was demoted to fourth Expert wh en Steve Leivan claimed th ird place a quarter mile from the finish.
