The liquid-cooled, 749cc fourlinder powerplant is both 23mm .horter (th anks to a n oversq uare bore nd stroke) and lighter than previous FZR750-ba sed engines sold in th e U.S. The FZR750RR features tita nium co n nec ting rods, and tworinged pi stons. The more co mpact e ng ine allows th e en gi ne to be posi tioned more vertical th an befor e, gi vin g the bik e a shorter wheelbase. In addition, th e three intak e valves for each cyli nder ha ve been enlarged from 21 to 23mm, while the two exhaust valves hav e in creased from 23 to 24.5mm; com p ressio n ratio is set a t II : I. Four 38m m flat-slide Mikuni carburetors feed th e four in-line cylin de rs with a ir being supplied by Yam aha's F.A.I. (Fresh Air Inlet ) system. The FZR750RR is eq uipped with electr onic ig nitio n and Yam aha's EXUP exhaust co ntrol system ; but unl ike th e FZRlOOO, th e FZR750RR uses a butterfly-type EX UP valve rath er than th e FZRIOOO's rotary-type. The FZR 's spares kit includes forged pi stons, rings, clutch plates, gask ets, co mp lete selection of jetting and additional gearing. Other cha n!?es from previous models begin wah. th e steer ing head angle, whi ch has been reduced to 24.5 degrees with a trail of 100mm, and a new triangulated Deltabox alloy swingarm. The FZR750RR uses a 43mm fork and a full y-adjustable Ohlins rear shock; twin 320m m floatin g front discs; a single 210mm . floating rear di sc; V-ra ted, 120/ 70VRI7 Michel in radial s up front a nd 170/60VR 17 o n the rear; 3.50x17 front and 5.50x 17 rear cas t-alloy wh eels; 20-liter fuel tank; a nd a n electron ic tach . T he bik e weighs in at 440 pounds dry. Ya m ah a ' s cham p io ns h ip, winn ing TZ250 features 19 changes fo r 1990. Those incl ude: cylinder head sha pe and size changes 10 redu ce engine weight; co mbustion chamber shape change to improve p ow er ; cy lin de r bod y/h ead bolt pattern change to bett er control heat expans ion; a narrower crankshaft to allow ' for a lighter, more compact engine case; more compact Mikuni TM38-t yp e ca rb u re to r bodies to reduce weight; larger reed valves for in creased engi ne intake; new exha ust pipe dim ensions for more p eak horsepower; a larger wat er pump fo r 13% in crease in wate r flow ; a larger radia tor with more coo li ng co res to in crease coo ling capacity by 6%; th e dri ve cha in is moved left an addition al 5mm to allo w for a wid er rear tire; engine is positioned 25mm fo rward and ang led an additio nal 4.5 degrees for better weig h t di stribution; wh eelbase has been sho rte ned 25mm; rear shock absorber's stroke movem ent decreased by 5mm to help redu ce wear a n d h eat build-up ; fairin g is cha nged for 5% m ore ae rody nam ic efficiency; front and rear brake calipers are larger; rear tire size has been in creased from 3.25/ 5.7 5-RI7 , to 3. 80/ 6.00-R I 7; rea r wh eel size has been increa sed to accept th e larger tir e; steering caster an gl e is decreased from 23 degr ees/ 30 minutes to 22 degrees/ 40 minutes; steering offset is redu ced from 42 to 37m m. Eac h TZ250 will co me with a comp lete spa res kit and will be sold o n a first-com e, first-serve basis for $13,000. Yama ha is posting co ntingencies in the AMA 250cc Grand Pr ix Series poi nt standings, with $3000 being aw arded to the ser ies ham p ion, $2000 go ing to th e runner-up and 1000 goi ng to th e th ird-place rid er.• Andre."
