To quali fy for th e Ultracross mai n event , a ride r must firs t ride a timed qualifi er after practice to determine his starti ng position in o ne of the heat races. Once th e riders transfer to a heat race th ey are pl aced in one of nine, two- ma n rows. The start is inv ert ed with th e faster riders beginn ing in the rear, and th e slower rid ers leading off up front. Then th e riders wh o transfer from the heat race advance to the final wh ere th ey ar e again inverted. Additiona l cham p io ns h ip points and money are awarded for every opponent a rider passes on his route to the checkered n ag in both the heat race and the ma in . This way of scoring makes it possible for a rider who finishes in th e bac k of the pack to gain more series points than the event winner. Duri ng the timed qualifiers 23 riders went against the clock with Vohland t u r n i n g in th e fastest - single-lap in a time of 34.820 seconds. Kawasaki tea m m a te Hughes was less then a heartbeat off the pace with a 34.843 second time, wi th Jeremy McGrath pos ting a 34.919 time for the third q ualifying position. Thomson was the fourth and final rider to gain extra championship points with his fast lap of 35.115. Due to a small rider turnout, only one heat race was needed. That race saw Ryan Carlisle jump out to th e Chris Trickle (79) got off to a good start in the main. but fell in the first turn ahead of Jeremy McGrath. early lead ahead of Scott Underwood, Voh land, Brad Bolton . Tracy Monterone and McGrath. Underwood quickly overtook Carlisle. but lost the lead position to Vohland on lap ' three. Once into the lead. Vohland immediately opened up a small Team Kawasakis Jeff"The Chicken Man" Matiasevich had an incredible day at Steel City USAs AMA MX National. The 1989 Western Region 125cc Supercross Champ pounded the competition all day. And when the smoke cleared, he'd won the 125cc overall for his very first 125cc National outdoor victory. And hes looking forward to a lot more. Incidentally,JefTh teammate JeffWard had quite a day, too. cushion as McGrath pounded his way into second ahead of the hard ch a r g in g H ughes. Holley was fourth , in front of -Carlisle and Ray Crumb. As the riders started on the fifth lap, Vohland crashed, surrendering the lead position to ' McGrath. The JEFF Team Green/Hi Poin t/Wh ite Brosl FMF/Scott/Bell-sponsored rider quickly parlayed his small lead into a three-second cushion as H olley began pressuring Hughes for the runner-up spot.
