Kessler, Carsten win again at Raceway Park MX By Rosanne Lukaitis ENG LISHT O WN, NJ , SEPT. 17 T hereare o n ly two mor e races lell in th e 1989 mot ocross seaso n at Racew ay Park and the question is: Who will break th e winning strea ks of Mickey Kessler and Barry Ca rsten? Throu gh most of th e seaso n both meers have won th e overalls in their respective clas ses, but not without some tou gh co m pe titio n. T od ay was no d ifferen t as Kessler too k both the Open and 250cc Ex pert win s and Carsten claimed the win in the 125cc Expert clas s. Suzuki-mounted Carsten head ed out th e ga te an early lead in th e 125cc Expert class a nd was never headed. Mike Bilardello , aboa rd hi s Kawasak i. Yamaha-m ounted Jim Mcll· va ine, Suzuki privateer Brian Carroll and fellow Suzuki racer Dan Portz held th e LOp· five pl acings heading th e Woodbridge Kaw a saki Steps. Carroll expe rienced mech anica l probl ems a nd was soon o u t of co nten tio n, and Portz inherited fo urt h , Star ting out m id-pa ck. Kawasaki-mounted Sco u Sheak closed III o n Portz . and soon mad e th e pas s. Cars ten , with a com fortable lead, co uld not be aware of th e tight baili e going o n betw een Mci lvaine and Bilard ello in second and third. Each rim e Bilard ell o tried to pass Mcilvaine he was sh u t out. Further back in th e pa ck , Ed Bao on a Suzuki sliced his way through positions and passed Po rtz. At 'he chec kers, Carsten did it again. followed by Mcilvaine. Bao, Po rtz and Bilard ello. . Bilardello grabbed th e lead in the fin a l moto with Sheak, Jason Riv as and Bao right behind. Fair ly new to thi s class, Rivas powered his Suzuki to tak e over the lead coming down the mogul as Bao moved into third, Carsten held fourth , bu t he made a pa ss on Bao in to th e tabletop sectio n. Sheak took the lead momentaril y co m ing o ver th e plunge. but Carsten took Riva s at th e bouorn of th e plunge and Sha nk over th e Su percross sectio n to take th e lead. Ca rs ten's 1·1 fini sh es ga ve him yet ano ther win . foll owed by Mc Ilva ine, Sh eak and Portz : in the overall resu lts. In th e Open Expe rt class, Kessler took th e o utside wh en th e ga te dropped as well as th e lead . J im Kapitan held seco nd with Jerr y Seip a nd Brian Carro ll not far behind, Kapitan started to close in o n M ick " the q ui ck" Kessler . forming a right ga p. The duo had a IO·second lead over Seip and Carroll in thi rd a nd fourth. Carroll , wh o had a problem in th e 125cc class, was making up for lost time as he took Seip in th e back sectio n. As th e chec kers fell Kessler too k the win with Kapitan, Carroll, Seip and Dawson Ransome followi ng , respectively. Seip wasted no tim e gelling o u t of the gate in the final moto, but Carroll was not letting Seip get too comfortable and neither was Kessler. Kapitan had a bad start as he went down in the firs t tum but th in gs wo uld soo n change. Carroll, the only rider separating Kessler from the lea der. was not giving an inch . Kessler took Carroll and Seip by the end of the Supercross section to take the lead. Kap itan, picking his way through the competition, pulled alongside Carroll and made the pass stick. Kapitan 'oo k Seir. by the surfer tum, but could not ge' by the eader. Kessler finis hed with a I -I score and Kapitan went '0 GREAT SPORTSMAN TROPHIES & PRIZES !!!
