at Raceway Park MX
By Rosanne Lukaitis
ENG LISHT O WN, NJ , SEPT. 17
T hereare o n ly two mor e races lell in th e 1989
mot ocross seaso n at Racew ay Park and the
question is: Who will break th e winning
strea ks of Mickey Kessler and Barry Ca rsten?
Throu gh most of th e seaso n both meers have
won th e overalls in their respective clas ses,
but not without some tou gh co m pe titio n.
T od ay was no d ifferen t as Kessler too k both
the Open and 250cc Ex pert win s and Carsten
claimed the win in the 125cc Expert clas s.
Suzuki-mounted Carsten head ed out th e

fellow Suzuki racer Dan Portz held th e LOp·
five pl acings heading th e Woodbridge Kaw a saki Steps. Carroll expe rienced mech anica l
probl ems a nd was soon o u t of co nten tio n, and
Portz inherited fo urt h , Star ting out m id-pa ck.
Kawasaki-mounted Sco u Sheak closed III o n
Portz . and soon mad e th e pas s.
Cars ten , with a com fortable lead, co uld not

Mci lvaine and Bilard ello in second and third.
Each rim e Bilard ell o tried to pass Mcilvaine
he was sh u t out. Further back in th e pa ck ,
Ed Bao on a Suzuki sliced his way through
positions and passed Po rtz. At 'he chec kers,
Carsten did it again. followed by Mcilvaine.
Bao, Po rtz and Bilard ello. .
Bilardello grabbed th e lead in the fin a l moto
with Sheak, Jason Riv as and Bao right behind.
Fair ly new to thi s class, Rivas powered his
Suzuki to tak e over the lead coming down
the mogul as Bao moved into third, Carsten
held fourth , bu t he made a pa ss on Bao in to
th e tabletop sectio n. Sheak took the lead
momentaril y co m ing o ver th e plunge. but
Carsten took Riva s at th e bouorn of th e plunge
and Sha nk over th e Su percross sectio n to take
th e lead.

In th e Open Expe rt class, Kessler took th e

forming a right ga p. The duo had a IO·second
lead over Seip and Carroll in thi rd a nd fourth.
Carroll , wh o had a problem in th e 125cc class,
was making up for lost time as he took Seip
in th e back sectio n. As th e chec kers fell Kessler
too k the win with Kapitan, Carroll, Seip and
Dawson Ransome followi ng , respectively.
Seip wasted no tim e gelling o u t of the gate
in the final moto, but Carroll was not letting
Seip get too comfortable and neither was
Kessler. Kapitan had a bad start as he went
down in the firs t tum but th in gs wo uld soo n
change. Carroll, the only rider separating
Kessler from the lea der. was not giving an
inch . Kessler took Carroll and Seip by the end
of the Supercross section to take the lead.
Kap itan, picking his way through the competition, pulled alongside Carroll and made
the pass stick. Kapitan 'oo k Seir. by the surfer
