Pascarella, Roth score doubles at Sunrise Trans-Cal MX By Donn Maeda ADE LA NTO, CA, SEPT . 30 Four standout performances were put in by Mike Pascarella and Brian Roth at round 'seven of the Dodge Trucks./Clvl'C Trans-Cal Series at Sunrise Cycle. Park. Each rider turned in four perfect moto scores with Pascarella sweep . h 125 d 250 P mg t e an. cc ro classes and Roth taking th e 125 30 and 250cc Intermediate class wins. Pascarell a h ad little trouble winning th e l25cc Pro class as he started near th e front in both motos and motored by the leaders aft er a few laps. G reg Tierheimer p owered his Suzuki through th e first tum ahead o f Pascarell a, Brian Pryor a nd jim Cla y in the o pe ni ng 125cc Pro class moto. Pascarella stalked T ierhe ime r a nd sai led past on lap three over a tabletop jump. As Pascarella p u lle d away, Pryor began to pressure Tier-: heimer and found a n open in g in a fast, swee pi ng turn , dove to the ' inside a nd stu ffed Tierheim er back to third place. On th e whi te flag lap Tierheirner's Suzuki sputtered to a halt, h anding hi s position to Clay. Although Pryor trie d to ca tch Pascarella, he was unab le to gain time a nd had to settle for secon d. Tierheimer grabbed his seco n d holesh otof th e da y in moto two , but rig h t o n h is knobs were P ry o r , Pasca rell a an d Randy Moody. Pryor quickl y swooped past in a tigh t turn, th en Pascarell a was next to bump T ierhe ime r ba ck as he flew past on the fron t tab le to p. Pascarella then chased down Pry or, a nd while he lo oked fo r a n opening , Moody charged past Tierheimer and began to ca tch th e leaders. Pascarella took th e lead on th e fifth lap a nd pulled ou t a com fortable lead, taking th e mot o win ahead of Pryor, Moody an d Clay. Also on the move was Craig Davis, w ho swo o ped past Still m ock a n d began to pressure Wynne. Davi s moved into seco nd o n lap three when Wynne lost h is rh ythm in th e whoop sectio n. Whil e Berg co n rin u ed to pad his lead, Pascar ella was struggling up from a ninth p lace sta rt. By lap four, Pa scarella h ad m oved into fourth a nd was breathing down Wynne's jersey, then railed past Wynne in a fast swee pe r. Pascarella then pulled a lo ngside Davis and bounced past in th e whoop section to take ov er seco nd place. \ Although Berg had . established quit e a lead, it wasn 't enough to overcome Pascarella's charge. The Suzuki rider caught the leader on the last lap and passed Berg in the whoops then took the checkered flag just ahead of Berg, but well ahead of Davis and Wynne. Scotty Takacs pulled a huge holeshot in moto two ahead of Pascarella, Berg and Posca, but los t his front end in the fast first turn: While Takacs was break dancing in front of Pa scarella, Berg snuck by on the outside and led Posca, Davis and Dean Matson around the track. Berg began to build an early lead, hoping to capitalize on Pascarella's first turn mishap. Matson soared past Posca over a sma ll double jump and took over the runner-up position. Davis snuck by Posca in the finish turn, and began to reel in Matson, who lost control and went down. Meanwhile, Pascarella sliced through the pack and was fourth by lap four. Pascarella jumped past Ron Allen and took over third, then set his sigh ts on Davis. Pascarella used th e ou tside line o f the ba ck sweeper to overtake Davis then set out to catch - Berg, who seemed out of reach. Within four laps, Pascarella had moved up onto Berg's rear fender and as they approached the tabletop Pascarella soared in to the lead. Pascarella finished ahead of Berg, Allen and Davis. Pat Gomm blasted his Honda into th e lead of th e first l25cc Intermediate class moto, but close behind were Brian Roth, Scott McElroy and .Sta n Finney. Roth wa sted no time and slid by Gomm in a sweeper, th en pulled away from th e rest of th e field. McElroy hounded Gomm a nd flew past as th ey hit th e front tabletop. On th e next lap, Gomm came up sh ort on th e tabletop a nd crashed h anding third pl ace to joe Bruce. Roth took th e chec kered flag a head o f McElroy, Bruce and T y Birdwell. Moto two saw Roth st eal th e h ol eshot with McElroy , Derrick Willis an d Finney in tow. With a cl ear tra ck a head o f h im, R oth opened up a lead th at h e would h old to th e finish , while McElroy a nd Willis joc keyed over th e runner-up position. Willis stuck to McElroy's rear fender and made repeated a tte m p ts to pass. McEl ro y held him o ff until th e last lap wh en Will is dove to th e in sid e of th e fin ish turn and took over seco nd. In 250cc Intermed iate class action Tony "Sulek hol esh ot th e first m oto with McElroy, Chris Ridgeway and Andy Grider clos e behind. McElroy dove to th e ins ide of th e first turn and took over the top spot, leading th e pack onto th e track. Ridgeway pressured Sulek for seco n d, but on lap four th e shock linkage on his Kawa saki snapped, knocking him o u t of contention. Roth took o ver third a nd look ed for a wa y around Sulek, soaring over him a n d int o seco n d ov er th e tabletop, th en se t out to ca tc h McElroy. Roth took the lead when McElroy went down in a slip pery turn to take the moto win a head o f Sulek, Darren Gallagh er a nd Mcf.lroy, Roth blasted into th e lead of th e second moto, but sh adowing him were Andy Grider, McElroy and Sulek. Roth tr ied to open up a lead, but Grider had different idea s and stuck to Roth's rear fender. Sulek stalked McElroy and as th ey a p p ro ac hed th e tabletop he pulled alongside McElroy and sped past in the following turn. Although Grider made repeated attempts to take the lead, Roth held his lines and took the moto win. Close behind Roth and Grid er were Sulek, Gallagher and McElroy. .. Eric Casas holeshot the first 250cc junior moto ahead of Mike Giem, Phil Butler and Chingis Galland. Butler quickly displaced Giem then made a few attempts to take the lead, but seemed to back off towards the end of the moto. Tyler Hummel overcame a bad start and worked into fourth by the moto's end. Casas took the checkered ahead of Butler, Giem and Hummel. Casas pulled another holeshot in the second moto ahead of Casas, Giem and Chad Doggett. Butler bounced past Casas in the whoop section and pulled out to a 15-second lead that he would hold to the finish. Doggett o ut-d ista nced Giem over a high-speed jump and took over third on the fourth lap. Butler finished well ahead of Casas, Doggett and Giem. jeff P estana powered his big Honda down th e start straight ahead of Rex Staten, jon Nelson and Scott Brown in the opening 500cc Pro moto.
