That a New Frien d was waiting at one of my stops, and we rode away togeth er. T he pavement was mine, em p ty and endless. I had passed th rough cany ons, in to swe ep ers. up onto th e long flats rising from forest. Th ere had been a car or two, nothing more. After all , it was daw n, barely. And w hen I swung into th e cafe lot and stepped inside, th e coo k was si ng ing and brew ing the day's fi rst coffee. It was th at tim e of m orn ing to be out and around! I ate, m ade notes, and in the sunrise saw other motorcycles had joined mine outside. R iders no w stood and talk ed w ith steam ing cu ps in th eir hands. Friendships. I tried ·dream ing myself part of th em, but I was solo, and wen t q uietly to moun t up. To take th e h ill by m yself. But a voice int errupted, asking about tires - his was a proposal f or con v ersation . W e ex ch an ge d thou ghts that fell right in to sync. A nd look! We owned th e same make; his I LOO, my 750. And we took to th e road toge ther - N ew Friends. We pushed hard but with care; our rid ing sty les paired, too. T urn s vanished beh ind us. And when we stop ped for a drin k, it was a place I' d never been; a tavern out of th e past - all wood and stone, with a well- worn coun ter and leather stoo ls. We talk ed and our careers em erged and mingled. A nd w hen we pa id u p and left, we switched bik es. Now th e scenery cam e an d wen t q u icker, skirti ng th e desert's rollin g edge, alon e and perfect as a pa ir of birds in fl ight. My lan dscape eye saw us from a great distance, tw o do ts way below, travel in g that ribb on, on e wit h th e other. And when we came again to th e reality of life, w here H om e-&-Fam ily is th is direction and that, we 'paused and made plans to ride again soon. I wou ld try his roads; he would try m in e. We'd share the best of our favor ites. A new union was born th at m ot orcycle day, th at chance encoun ter. R ider and R ider doing what they have since the first du et of ma ch in e-driven w heels. T hey paired up. They rode togeth er how th ey kn ew best. And shook hands befo re part ing. It's w hat th is riding th ing is about. Open roads inv iting ope n m in ds.
