Coming into the race. Dutchman led defending series champs H yperCycle in the point standi ngs, II I to 60. H yper -Cycle' s riders have all been injured recen tly, and th eir effo rt th is weekend with su bs tit ute riders Sco tt Gray and T o m m y Lynch was shel ved by tr an sm issio n pro b lems a fte r runn in g as hi gh as third at th e halfway poin t. Quarterl ey led a t th e start, with Arnaiz m oving into th e lead in turn 10 on lap two. By th e en d of th e riders' first hour-plus sti nt, Quarterley had retaken the lead. When Arnaiz ' teammat e Kress took ove r, he was loo king at a 20-second defici t. Kress quickly reversed th e tre nd, and by the end o f h is sti nt he was 18 seconds ahead of Ha rth/Quarterley. The stage was set for the final Quarterley versus Arnaiz co nfrontation , and on la p . 89 , Q ua rterley retook th e lead with just 15 mi nutes remaining. Q uart erley stretched h is advantage, but th e Motor Sport team dealt the fin al blow to themselves wh en Arnaiz ran out of ga s on the fina l lap, and pushed across the line to take seco n d p la ce. " Wh en the leader sets the pace, it's harder on him, " said Q uarterley after the race. " T h e second guy can be smoother. It allowed us to save the tir es.,. " T h is one's o n Dal e (Q uarter ley),' said H art h, " H e did a lo t m ore th an I did ." Fif th p lace went to the 3-D Racin g GSXR IIOO of Sears Po in t specia lists David Deveau a nd Mark McDaniel , with Team Gibsonia/Englert Racing's Dave Sm it h and Ben Beasley finishing sixth (desp ite the fact th a t their FZR IOOO lost its seco nd gear). CSE Racin g 's local rid ers Dwa yne Chu ng a nd Bob Vargri n fi n ish ed seventh on another GSXR l IO O. J ohnson & Wood 's Lee Sh ier ts an d Du ane Su m mers ra n into trouble la te in th e race - first with a sli pp ing cl u tch, and th en wh en th e bike ran o ut o f gas a n d Sh ierts followed Arnaiz across th e line on foot to ta ke 15th p lace overa ll , an d 11th in the GTO class. The lowly finish , their. seco n d 'in a ro w, drops th em from fifth to seventh in th e points ch ase. Fastline Racing's J eff Stern an d Jeff Rheaume retired from th e race wi th an ill-han d ling G SXRIIOO, drop p in g the m from third to fifth in po ints. T hey wanted to co m pete o n t heir G SXR 750 , but Stern wrecked it in a p ra cti ce crash. Local rid ers (a nd brothers) Kirk a nd J eff H oep pner of Team No Drugs led the GT U di visi on for m uch of the race befo re a n after market ignition ro tor exploded, sh utting th ei r Yama ha FZR600 down for the day on la p 57. Wi th T eam No Drugs ou t of th e race , th e GTU contest was wo n by defe nding series champs Ro swell H onda wit h riders Stephe n Ma tthe ws a nd Cam Ro o s fi n is h ing eigh th overall on a n FZR600. The wi n a llowed R o sw ell H onda to n arro w th e gap o n GTU points leader s Team Toomer, wh o were a bse nt from Sears Point, 105 to 83.
