T he Fos nock/Brown du el o f mo to o ne was the best o f th e week, the two trading th e top spot five tim es before Bro wn stu ffed th e YZ250 rider wi th ha lf a lap to go. Fosnock re mounted for second and th en fo llowed Team Green 's H u gh es home in th e second hea t a head o f Bro wn, setti ng the sta ge for a dr a ma tic fina l co nflic t betw een the two of th em. Hughes again wo n the last hea t but it was a reserved Fosn ock wh o took the titl e by p lacing two spots a breas t o f Brow n. Fosn ock wo ul d later ba tt le Bro wn a nd Hughes for the 125cc A Stock win but with less su ccessful resu lts. Hi s th ird hea t win was not enough to catch Bro wn. who posted a n impress ive 3- 1-2 to o u tn u m ber runner-up Da vid Beckingt on 's 2-37 and the 11-5-1 of Fosnock. Hughes went 13-2-3 for fourth . Mike Stahlm an , Keith Johnson and Gene Na umec had a classic th ree-way confronta tio n in the Open A di visio n th a t stre tche d across a ll three motos, Naumec ca p tured th e ope ni ng leg on hi s KX500 a head o f Johnson and Stahlman a nd th en foll owed Stahlman 's Yama ha across the line in the seco nd leg. T ha t meant a virt ua l three-man tie goi ng into the fin a l heat, th ough Na u mec's bid wou ld end with a " DNF" th ree la ps into the race. J ohnson took aim a t Stahlman but the Missouri leader could not be ca ug h t and scored th e titl e after placin g th ird last year. T wice -defe nding class cha m p Robbie Taylor was o n hand fo r a sho t a t three in a row bu t , h ad th e mi sfortune of a kidn ey stone problem on openi ng day , forci ng h im to wi thdraw fro m contentio n. Hayden Rich ards o pe ned the 85cc Chris Considine (1) lead s Donald Ledd (22). Todd Thornburg (16) and Casey Bowyer (30) in the 51 cc class. In the second heat it was R icha rds back-home rival Sha ne L aw son takin g co m m a n d with Richards p lacing h is KX80 in th e n umber-two spo t. Law son, wh o had suffered a first-heat seventh with a frie d cl u tch, was o ut o f con tention for th e overall b ut kept his momentum goi ng through th e last leg wi th a no ther mot a win, though Rich ards, who dogged Lawson right to th e flag, iced the Nationa l title with ano ther run ner-u p ride. Ferry's 2-33 tally was good for second spot ahea d of Law so n wit h Wa lt e rs end ing the week in fou rt h. Walters mad e hi s mo ve in the Modifiedra n ks, cha lking up a first hea t first a hea d of J ason Fow ler and Ferrv and then follow ed Steve O lson , R ichards an d La wso n across th e lin e in hea t two . A final showing o f second pl ace ga ve Walters the titl e as well as a ticket to J apan , wh ile R icha rds sett led fo r to p com bined h o nors wi th seco nd in front o f Fow ler. Lawson, who crashe d back to sixth wh en he made a go a t hea t three leader Rich ards, was aw arded a trip from Yok ohama to the Tokyo Su percross for the Most Impressive Effort, a new award to be g iven o ut every year a t th e even t. In th e highl y-com pe tit ive 85cc (913) ra nks Kawasak i rider Ezra L usk a nd Su zu ki p i lo t Crai g Decker enga ged o ne a no the r in a week-lo ng battle for top honors. Lusk raced away ' with th e Stock title wi th a for mi da b le 1- 1-2 s how i ng , two poi n ts bett er than Decker 's 3-2-1. H onda rider Matt Sh ue , who posted a 2-5-3 score, took th ird o vera ll in the class. In th e Modified versio n it was Decker 's turn to lea d the way, as he racked u p a pair of moto wins a fter a n o pe ning second-place fini sh a nd secu red th e title from Lusk, wh o posted a 1-2-3. Ok lah oma's rising sta r Robbie Reynar d chec ked in with a third-place fini sh via a 4-4-2 effort, Reyna rd , however, would not go home witho ut a tit le. H e acce p ted the num ber-o ne pl ate in the 85cc Stock (7-11) cla ss, hi s seco nd stra ig h t title, with a 1-2-1 fini sh . T he KX80 rider 's sh u t-o u t bid on th e o the r 4 1 racers in th e class was halt ed by heattwo win ner Kevin Windham. Wind ham wo uld to tal five points with a 2- 1-2 showing for seco nd overall , while Kan sas' Robb ie Skaggs wo uld pu t up threes across th e board for th ird on the week. Another fast young ride r from Kansas, Andy Bowyer, cap tured the 65cc cla ss cha m p io ns hip , ca rd ing a 2-1-3. T he Kawasa ki rider bettered T. Ryan Ka ichen (3-6-2) by five points with J oey Sche u IeI' p lacing thi rd. T he heartbreak ride of th e week belonged to Ohio 65cc rider Brock Sellards. The yo u ngster dom inated the first mo to but suffered engine , failure in th e second race and suffered a 42 point addition to h is to tal.
