Lucer o charges to Costa Mesa Speedway win By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, AUG. 1 National Speedway Champion Steve Lucero defeated two for mer National Champions a nd Amer ica 's brightest youn g star to win th e Scratch m ain a t t h e Ora n g e Cou n ty Fair grounds . Lining up with th e 1988 Na tio nal Champion wa s 1986 Ch ampion .Bobby Sch wa m , 1987 Cha mp io n Brad Oxley and 19 year-o ld Bill y Ham ill . Out of gat e three, Lu cero got an incred ible start and l'umped into the early lead . Ha mill, off the po e. had a good react ion to the tapes, but he immedia tely wheelied. By the tim e he Kat squared away. Sch wa rtz had moved ahea d of him lor second. Sch wartz co uld not gel clo se enoug h to th e high-Fl ying lead er to mak e a strong challenge in th e firs t two laps. On lap three he had to wa tch as Lu cero pulled away lrom h im . Ha m ill a nd Oxl ey were r ight behind Schw artz throug h th e first three circu its. while Hamill wheeli ed away from Oxley. That a llo wed Sch wa nz to ta ke a n uncontested second . but he was far behi nd winner Lu cero. For Lu cero. it was h is th ird Scra tch win at Cost a Mesa as Nat ion al Champion. AUG . 3 For th e third week in a ro w, 'Engla nd 's Ph il Co llins sho wed everyo ne how to rid e th e o u tside and won the Scratch main a t Ascot South Bay Stadium. Nat ional S peed way Champ ion Stev e Lucero gated pole sitter Co lli ns when the main event left th e line. Earlier in th e meet in g. Collins deleat ed Lu cero in th e first Scra tch heat, In th e ma in . Lu cero had reven ge o n his mind. As th ey exit ed the seco nd turn. Co lli ns got a big d ri ve. II served two purposes , It entre nc hed him firm ly in second and, mor e im portantly, it put him o n the o utside. Co llins was sizing up Lu cero as th ey en tered tum three o n the fint lap. \Vhen th e circuit en ded , Co lli ns sho t arou nd Lucero a nd became the new leader . As is the 'case most of th e time when he ca n make th e d irt wor k. he ran away. By the halfway point in th e race, he was live lengths up on Lu cero. There was no den yin g Co lli ns a nd he took his sixth South Bay Stadium win of th e year. Lucero, Mike Far ia a nd Greg H an co ck rounded o UI the lield . In th e co m panion Handi cap main, Northern California Champion Jim Sisemore took th e lead ea rly and went o n to th e win . Comin g fro m th e 40 yard line, he was second to sophomore rid er Char les Ermolenk o wh en th e race bega n. Brad Oxley sa l in third. Sisemor e mad e his firs t assault on Ermolenk o in turn three o n lap o ne. The yo ung rider met the cha llenge 01SISem or e a nd turned h im away. In tur n , o ne o n the next lap, Er mo len ko laded an d Sisem or e went pa st. At the end 01the lap, Ox ley and Far ia sand wiched the young rid er and th ey' took over second and third. Faria occ upied seco nd and he began to work o n Sisemore o n lap three. Without a main even t win sin ce the middle of J une, Faria was hungry . H e ap plied pres sure o n th e o utside, but Sisemo re wou ld not wilt. On th e sam e lap , Oxley broke a nd coasted to the inlield. The track had a blue gr oov e and was ge tt ing d usty in the-main . Faria had a couple 01ho pes. One was to kn ock Sisemore off th e groove and th e o ther was for Sisemo re 10 break. Conside ri ng th a t he gives u p 10 pou nds to Sisemore, o nly the second hope was viab le. On lap seven Sisemore brok e awa y fro m Faria . He raced a ll lo r a big lead an d the win. Faria sta yed in seco nd with Sco tt Brant th ird . After the fini sh, Sise more rook a victory lap with th e chec kered flag. Wh en he wh eelied o n the back ch ute, he promptly lell o rr bike.
