about that? "At first, it bothered
me, but I got over it, " Gray said.
"I looked at my times from last
year and I was going faster than
these guys (t he current crop of
championship hopefuls) are this
year." Gray allegedly lost his
Yosh imura ' ride because he
crashed t oo often last year, costing the team too much money.
Speaking of being in the shadow,
Ra ndy Mamola Racin g's R ichard
Oliver has spent the last few years
playing second fiddle to Team
Viceroy Yamaha's three-time Castro!
250cc GP champ, John Kocinski.
Now that Koci nski is planning to
head to Europe in 1990, Ol iver will
have his best shot at the 250cc title.
So what does O liver want to do? He
wants to race in Europe. O liver has
spoken with a number of European
teams, but so far the main deterrent
is his age (27). "They all say they'd
sign me, no prob lem, if 1 were 21,"
said Ol iver. "I can' t u nderstand it.
They want someo ne that's going to
improve over the next few years. It
might take me a few races to get
competitive, bu t I' m ready to deliver
now."
No one was seriously hurt at this
year's Sears Point National road
race , but the track still came under
fire for its dangerous lack of runoff
room. Among the most vocal was
Lassak Racing's Richard Moore,
who finished seventh in the 250cc
GP class. "I don't feel comfortable pushing it on a dangerous
track. I like fast, technical t racks,
not go-kart tracks where you can
get killed if you fall off:' Moore
said. " The scariest moment was
when Richard Oliver's bike
crossed the track without a rider;
that could have been real bad. "
Oliver crashed in turn 10 whi le in
. second place on the first lap of the
250cc GP final, with his Yamaha
bouncing off the nearby Armco
barrier and crossing the track in
front of the following pack.
Fortunately, no one hit it.
J im Doyle, manager of Cagiva
factory Gra n d P r ix star Ran d y
Mamola, attended the Sears Point
National roa d race after recently
having open-heart surgery. Doyle, an
airline pilot by trade, was taking it
easy in a rented motorhome. and says
it will be a while before he'll resume
flying. "The FAA req uires a pilot to
take six months off following any
type of heart surgery." Doyle said.
"After that, you have to get a checkup; they put you on a treadmill. It
then takes a few months to get the
results back. If all goes well, I should
have my license back in 8-9 months."
