AUG. 6 Ridin g o n h is horn e turf and an early minute prov ided Peter Postel with an edge o n th e co m pe titio n as he em er ged the overall victor in th e Vent ura County M.e. Mountain Qualilier Enduro held at Hungry Vall ey State Park and Los Padres Nat ional Forest near Gorman. The race was the first District 37 even t to be staged at th e area since 1986 and was nearl y sn uffed ou t befo re it began du e to stage two fire co nditions in the Ca liforn ia mountai n area. Cooperative efforts between th e forest servi ce and the club kept th e race open. with cl u b members hanging up closed signs a t trail ent ra nces as th ey took down th eir co urse markers. Postel . ridi ng a 25Occ, dropped zero points at hi s chec ks. claimed th e low est lim e o n the first special tests, had co ns isten tly low scores o n two o the r tests and th e motocr oss test to linish with th e da y's low est number of points - 2292. Hayden led the pack of nine riders around the first tum. then fired up the alterburners and pulled away lo r the Win. Sieve Pa tterson , 18. of Detroit, Mich iga n , inheri ted second place wh en G add ey crashed to take a narrow lead in th e series poi nt standings. Yamaha rid ers dominated th e GP, taking eight 01 th e lOP'" 10 fini shing posi tio ns. A co u p le 01 th e Michigan GP regu lars missed thi s round, namel y series leader Phil Pummell and Mart y Miller; both had o pted to race near horne in Ohio. The bi ggest benefactor 01 their absence would be Gaddey. who was in second place in th e sta nd ings com ing int o th is round th anks to his consisten t to p-fiv e fin ishes in th e fir st three ro unds. Pauerson was rea lly ru nnin g his Yam aha FZR600 deep into the turns and was able to break aw ay lrom the rest 01 the lield while keeping th e 750s 01Gaddey and Kli ng in sight. After .a couple 01 laps Gaddey and Kli ng mo tor ed away and it wa s a two-bike battle lo r the lead . Meanwhile. a tr em endous battle was going o n thr ee seco nds beh ind Patt erson in a fracas lor loun h. Bob Sandy on his Kawasaki ZX7 was holding off seven other rid ers in close formation. Fenwick had sliced through th e 37-bike field with rela tive ease until co mi ng upon thi s moving roa dblock. The o nly chance Fenwick would hav e at a top-three Finish was if he cou ld ge t a rou nd this cro wd, and fast. Pallerson fin ished second, a n im pressive feal co ns idering he was o n a 600cc bike. This was th e best Michi gan GP finish ever lor Patt erson . a nd it propelled him into th e series lead. Fenwick lin all y was able to pas s that large pa ck. a nd o n the last lap com pleled his cha rge by passing Sandy on the last lap to na il dow n third pla ce. \Vith o ne round remaining th e championship is slill up in Ihe air - as many as 10 riders have 3l least a slight chance o[ wi nning lh e series.
