(SME), a subsidiary of RJR Nabisco, lnc., contained the following statement f rom T. Wayne Robertson, senior v ice president of SME : " Th ere have been a number of reports in recent days speculating on the future of sports sponsorship of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. This speculation is just that - speculation . It has no basis in fact. R,J . Reynolds Tobacco Co ., as it has since the company started sports sponsorship in 1971, constantly reviews i t s sponsorship activities to determine if they are productive for the sponsoring brands. If and when the company makes any major cha nges, th ose changes w ill be announced to all int erested pa rt ies. Un less and until any such announcements are forthcoming , rumors and speculation - some of it w ild - are ' meaningless." R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. , through its Camel brand of cigarettes, sponsors both the AMA Grand National Champion ship/Camel Pro Series (dirt track) and the Camel Supercross Series, wh ich is also sanctioned by the AMA . It has also sponsored selected AMA National Cham p ionship Road Race Series rounds th is y ear. The R .J . Reynolds Tobacco Co . also sponsors other sporting events, including car racing , golf, tenn is and rodeo events. It may be " wild" and " mea n ingless" but the one rumor flyin g around in motor cycle circles is.th at Camel will cease spo nso ring the dirt tra ck seri es next year and increase its comm ittrnent to supercross.
