c (J.'C That m y Garage becam e my Worst Nig htma re, and my onlĀ» defense was to Clean It Out. For years I'd managed to avoid it, th ere were alw ays excuses to p ut it off. Su re there were! May be to morrow, next weeke nd, right afte r vacation, befo re th e end of summer, w hen win ter comes - and -on and on ! Seasons came and went. Calendars yellowed and dro pped to the floor. New motorcycle models go t talk ed about, debuted, tested, ridden fo r thousands of miles, th en sold or traded or sometimes retired. No sooner did a fresh decade arrive, it was ready for history. And th e jun k in my garage just p iled h igh er and high er. It got harder and harder to get in and get out. Th ere were heaps so massive and com p lex virtually an yth ing cou ld be under th em . No t just parts, but en tire m otorcycles even! Come to thin k of it, w here was th e No rton? H as an ybod y seen itt! Wh at happened to m y factory p ipe? T hat spare fairing? Weren't th ere tw o of th em ? What about those racing wheels th at had cost so m uch? H uh? Wh ere was the Paris-Dakar tan k? And th at neat solo seat? I can't rem em ber if it was black or red. Was th is monstrous mass so vicious it somehow altered states? Can prized mot orcycle th ings beco me use less carpet rem nants and fi rewoo d? R oll s of forgott en wallpape r? Mo th-eaten blankets and mildewed cam p tent s? And wha t happened to th ose things basic to every day ridin g? Like th e battery charger! Th e oi l drain pan! My tool box even! I could barely w heel my two bik es in and out. It came to a point w here doing an y maint enance was totally impossibl e. Hell, I was afraid to even go in th ere! Un til finally! On e recent m orning w hen a m ystic fog veiled th e road and made cany on pavem ent slipp ery as g rease - I th rew aside t his leth argy of mine and tore at the garage with a venomous rage. Out went th ose grizzled mattresses and unjixa ble chairs. Into th e trash went m om ent os so rem ot e th ey we re wei rd. Th ere we re g adge ts and gizmos as puzzling as ancient riddles. And w hole box es of brok en pa rts gears and sp rings and shafts that some Mad Max m ight shape into a ' m enacin g marvel! I was m ak ing great p rogress! Un til I foun d someth ing that stopped me cold. Th e keys to m y very first motorcycle. Just the keys.
