J ULY 22 On a night wh en th e New York S tate Speedway Championship was up for grabs at Action Park East. Warren Diem retu rned to pi ck up yet another cha m pio nshi p titl e. Trying a short stint at quarter mile raci ng, Diem had been absen t fro m s~way even ts for severa l ' weeks. After deciding he enjoye d spe ed wa y m ore than sh o rt tr ack, Di em mounted his Godden as o ne of th e 16 Division One riders signed in to co mpe te in th e annual Sta te Championship. With nothing but scratch ra cin g and a 16rider program. a ll rid ers would rid e five times a nd co mpete against eac h other o nce from eac h sta rting positi on . At th e com ple tio n of the 20th even t points were tabulated and th e top four point riders would !:o head to head in a fo ur-race runoff for th e ti tle, . Diem m issed a perf ect sco re of 15 by drop p ing heat 10 10 Tom Burge for a 14 point to ta l. Match in g his 14-po in t scor~a s Steve Wats on, wh o was beat en only"lll!'jy Diem. In the first ·25Occ Nov ice m oto , Redmond pulled th e hole shot clo sely followed by Wayn e Padgeu. Pad gett followed Redmond closel y fOT a lap befor e makin ~ his move, but aft er th e pass Padgett got SIdeways in a freshlywat ered section of the trac k a nd went to th e ground. Redmond reclai med th e lead and Pad gett was qu ickl y up in seco nd place. Redmond held hi s lead to th e chec kered fla g with a closin g Padgett i n second. O n lap two, Hi cks and Bates began to p u ll a way wh ile Weeks and Oakes began to pr essure Philley for third.
