The key to beati ng Co llins in th e main was to keep him away from the inviting cu shio n and whe n he dr ew ga le four, for that gave him a distinct advantage. When th e tapes went up Bobb y Schwaru carried a narrow adva nrage over Collins and Billy Hamill into lum o ne. Collins imme· dialel y went lor th e di rt. and as th ey cam e olf lurn two he hooked up and th e drive he gOl thru st him into the lead. By th e time Co llins made it to tum three, he had a four length lead over Hamill. Coll ins held lhe co mmanding lead as the first lap came to a close . You ng Hamill had 10 dea l wit h three speed way gray bea rds in the main . T wentynin e year -o ld Brad Oxley alo ng with Mike Faria and Boby Schw artz, both ~2, made up the teen ager 's co mpetitio n. Hamill started o n th e po le. Wh en referee jim "T he An im al " Fishback released th e tapes, Hamill was even into turn one with Fa ri a and Sch wa nz. Sa ndwiched o u t in a ti gh t seco nd turn , Sch wam dr opped 10 third, Faria held a slig h t lead as the four racers screamed into th e th ird co m er. There. Iverso n took a tum in the lead in heat two , putting his Yama ha in fro m 01 Ga bler a nd Fraunberger. j oey Winston low -sided o n lap five, bringi ng OUI the red flag . The singlefile restart was led by Iverso n , Gabler a nd Fraunburger, with Winston passing Ham m o n th e restart, finishing in tha t o rder. Wooten got a wh eel by a few times but Pal adino held o n lor lh e wi n.
