J ohn Ritchie led the pack into the first turn 10 start olC the Cirst moto, foll o wed by a large number of Vet novices. As the riders sorted themselves out. Dave Breno and Jim Bacon were closing fast on Ritch ie's CR500 . Both Breno and Bacon were ba ttling back and Iorth and shot past the lading leader without realizing it, Ritchie's problems continued when he stalled his big-bore Honda in a tight, orr-camber switchback. Rit ch ie dropped to the back 01 th e pa ck while tryi ng to start his bike, Up front. Breno and Bacon were joined by Chuck Freeman and Hale. On lap eight. Hale, wh o had been looking Cor a wa y 10 get by Freeman. found it and quickl y clo sed on Bacon. Bacon fell victim to m echanical problems on lap nine, dropping him out 01 the race. Sta nfield quick ly puta bad slart behind him and was bus y pas sing ride rs as they went over the sho Tt srction of the motocross co urse that was included in th e race. It was a hill y, muddy co urse that all owed few opportunities to pa ss. but Sta nfield picked off nders on e by on e and worked hi s way up 10 lhird posilion by the end 01 th e first lap.
