To quote: "Sorry to be getting to you so late in th e day, but just made it back from Suzuka aft er bein g stuc k in traffic, traffic, traffic ." Sarron and Vieira's 8-Hour vic tory th ere was Ken 's big weekend headl in e, but it was Japan 's T omei H igh way that wro te th e last wo rd in an y lan gu age today. TR AFFIC! And hom e here on our own fumey sho res the story was precisely th e same. I had ridd en later than usual and got into th e unhol y thick of it. Automobiles at a craw l as far as the eye cou ld see. The air was chok ing, th e sum mer sk y a sad beig e steam . I wanted to throw back my head and curse Progress! On my motorcycle I must have passed ten thousand cars. H ell, probably more! Lots more! In England, my wife and kids were waging th e same traffi c . jam wars on th e M25 outside London . My dau ghter on th e Riviera said th e French roads uiere even w orse. What is happen ing to us? Wh ere w ill it end? Maybe, hey, gee, w hat if everybody rode Motorcycles - ? H ah! Som ebod y w ou ld sure as heck build an I 8-wh eel er! Th ere would be m ota- va n s and mo ta -jeeps an d m oto-h omes! N o, th ere's no tan g ibl e so lutio n. Only th e dreamy Dream that it be lik e th e Fort ies again. Wh en you could fly unshackled through the day on a Brit ish T w in or American side-shifter. Wh en those con crete ribbons of our past we re st ill th e unborn freewa y stop-e-go, th e clogged interstate yet to come. Bu t even way back then the re was traffic. Because it's all relative and log ical and eternall y written in pavem ent. It's the p rice we pay fo r bein g indiv idua ls, for hav ing our own privat e w heels, fo r burn in g up the din osau rs. So th is dream resolution is somew here in th e clouds. L iterall y, A vapory high way p iercing Go d's great w hite canyons above. A plac e we can ride in mind, but sometimes in reality still - on an early Sunday morning with daw n's dew yet on the fi elds, and the road a long open offer to ride free and forever. T his is my personal revenge. .This is the time and place I choose. With a little lu ck , it will see me through.
