Kopecky (spo nsored by Trick Racin g Fuel, Bell Ray, Arai , T on y Smit h Raci ng, ICRT Micheli n and SuperTrapp) , Pa ul Vogel and Clinton Whiteh ou se, a ll three rid in g 750cc Suzukis, battling hard. Unfort u nately, Wh itehou se lost contro l of hi s bike around the middle of the race, leaving Kopec ky and Vogel in contention for m ini. .On the fifth lap , Toland ma naged to ease by Burke in turn one, stea ling his lead. The back straightaway had T oland break in g away from Burke, bu t Burke did n't like tha t one bit and p ushed it hard, erasi ng the distance between th em a nd starting to cha llenge Toland for hi s lost position. Up towards the turn five Budweiser Balcony, Burk e closed the doo r on T ol and and regai ned his first pos ition. Toland, havin g enjoyed the view from the fron t, wasn't abou t to give up and stayed with Bur ke for the rest of the race, hop in g to get a second cha nce for the lead. Meanwhil e, third-p laced Kopecky ha d a mishap wh en he broke too ha rd goin g into tum one, and Vogel had no trouble passing him on the insid e. Kopecky started failing back and Vogel pulled away . " I was j ust following you around. waiti ng for you to make a mistake," said Vogel to Kopecky, later. " I noticed you were po inting a t your bike and you left a big hole, so I took it. " On the last lap of the l2-lap sprint race, Burke crossed the lin e first, soli di fying his second win in a ro w in th e Formula One series . T oland came across for second, Vogel third and Kopecky fourth. T oland had thi s to say: " We had a rea l good ride. Barry rode real hard. The front end of my bike kept comi ng loose so I rode safe." " Kenny sli p ped a gear a t the beginning and that help a lot ," said Burke. In the first moto , Tin ney grabbed the ho leshot ahead of Cla y H oen sh ell a nd Hawthorne lor the ear ly lead. O n the secon d la p Hoens hel l block-pa ssed his way past T mney in the chicane and too k over the lead. O n the next lap Tinney pu lled next to Hoen sh ell in a whoops sectio n a nd took the lead when Hoen sh ell clipped a tire on the inside of the track a nd fell. H awth orn e the n used the open track to catch Tin ney mid way through the moto. The two Kawasaki riders blitzed the track a nd built a lead tha t too k them lar in fron t of the rest of the pack. T inney mai ntai ned his lead throug h the entire moto until, in the las t tum before the checkers , the two riders collided and Tinney was sent into the fen ce, H aw th orn e then took the ch eckered llag un contested. O nce again Roy Schellen berger fin ished third. In the Combined Intermediate class David Widmer put in hi s last ride befor e turning pr o a nd proved that he is ready to move up. In the first mo ta, Widmer su ffered a poor sta rt that left him midpack in the openi ng laps. Kent Eliff held the early lead ahea d of Dennis McCoy, J r. as Wid mer bega n his charge th rough the pack. By the mid way po in t Widm er had moved into th ird place a nd soo n pa ssed McCoy. With two laps rema ining Wid mer set up and passed Eli ff, and from there it was Widm er 's race as the Den ton Ya maha rider easily held the lead to take the first-mote victory. In the second moto Widmer gra bbed the holeshot and never looked back, taking the second mo ta and overa ll victory in convi nci ng style. Scott Moran cha rged from a poor start to claim second ahead o[Eliff, whose 2-3 moto scores were good eno ug h for second overa ll. Tony Smith was third overa ll with 4-4 moto finis hes. In the 125cc Novice class Doug G ill put his Ted Edward's Kawasaki /PJI -sponsored H on da in the winner's circle with victor ies in bo th motos. Behind Gill, Larty Massey worked his way throu gh the pack in both motos after sufferi ng from poor starts to 2~ 3 moto scores and second overa ll. That did not hinder the action a nd at the meeting's end, a swea ty Bobby Schwartz a nd Scott Brant mounted the victory podium. Schwartz coll ected hi s sha re of the holiday loot on the Scratch side of the program. Nati onal Champion Steve Lu cero gra bbed the early lead in the four lap main. Schwartz forced the leader wid e in tum three on the inaugural circui t. They crossed the line side by side to end the first lap and continued tha t way down the back ch u te on lap two . Hard charging Billy Hamill forced his way insi de of Lu cero. Lu cero hung with the 19year -old for a lap before he dropped back to third. On ce he sh oo k off Lucero, Hamill went call ing on Schwartz. H e tried to use the ins ide. but Schwam slam med the door in h is face. Hamill stayed with the vetera n, bllt he found the insi de path blocked by Schwartz every time he tried to shoot br.. At the ch eckered flag, Schwanz bea t Hamill by inches. Lu cero a nd Eddi e Castro rounded out the field. In the Handicap main, Steve Rus sell and Tony Bienert beat Charles "Duki " Ermolenk o in to the first tum on the start, Bienert go t the best of Russell on the first circui t and took full control of first . Brant wen t insi de Ru ssell on lap two for the numb er two spot. Rus sell dropped one more spot at the end of the third revolution when fanner National Champion Brad Oxley wen t by h im. Mike Faria had mechanical ills ; he pulled out on lap four. Finally on lap six, Bienert wilted under Brant's constant pr essure. H e slid off the groove in turn two and Bran t raced ben eath him for the lead. . Brant sh ot away from the pack. When the eig h t lap race ended, he had a half straigh t on second place Bienert.
