Raceway. J ami e Vollmer took an ear ly lead , bu t Litebol t struck on th e seco nd lap. pa ssin g o n the o uts ide and main taini ng h is lead to the checkered flag. Vollmer finis hed second, ta ki ng pressure fro m Bob King throu gh out the race. The 250cc class was domi na ted by Rob jones, who rode an aggressive race by tak ing th e lead at the start, Jo nes was im pressive: as he entertained th e crowd wit h hi s victory wh eelies. Robbie Soat took an uncontested second place and third place went to Tim Smith. The start of the 500cc main event saw Dale j ennernan taking an early lead with Tim Selby and Michael Blythe on his rear wh eel. O n lap four Selby slipped underneath j ennernan to take the lead , Bradl ey powered pas t j ennem an o n the ins ide o n lap six to take over second. O n lap six Pa ul Polhemus was able 10 slip past jenneman for a third-place finish. The Open Expert main was marred by a six ma n pil eu p m th e second comer, necessitating a restart. Steve Aseltine grabbed th e holesho t and never looked back, tak ing the class win with a flawless ride. Corey Brink ma in tained seco nd fro m be~ n ning 10 end. Thompson R OSAMOND, CA , JULY 4 The"Boingo Ra cing Tram wo n the a n n ual j uly 4 Firecra cker 500 End urance race, hosted by the America n Roa d Raci ng Association at Willow Springs Int ern at io nal Raceway. On the day o ur co untry became independent, Boingo Racing proved that some of the same q ualities that set this natio n free co ura ge and perserverance - were wha t was needed 10 win the race. In th e first ho ur of the race Tram CBR led , but after pull in g into the pits, BMR Motor sporlS too k the lead. La ter, wh en BMR pitted , CBR regai ned the lead. Going into the seco nd hour of th e race BMR Mo tospo rts was o nce agai n in lhe lead. Back a nd for th the lea ders wen L As one would pull in to the pi ts for eithe r a rid er cha nge o r to· refu el, th e o,he r wou ld move into th e lead. In the th ird ho ur, Bo in go Raci n~ sta rted to move in o n th e leaders , at tha t pomt BMR Mot orsports. BMR miscalcu lated thei r fuel co nsu mp ,io n and ra n out of gas o n the back straigh taway . Althou~h they lost qu ite a bit of ,im e, th ey had quite a lra d at that point a nd it d id not cost the m their first -pl ace position. In the fourth hour BMR once again pulled in lO the pi ts fo r a rider change , wh ich th ey completed in /' ust two seco nds. allo wing th em to hold first p ace. Later . they'd lose a cylinder and were forced to call it a da y. Wit h BMR o ut of th e race, Bo in go Raci ng was now the team to beat. Boingo soon cha nged riders and jumped back in the race. Not ma ny of th e facers were changing their tires a nd tha t in itse lf p layed a pa rt in their stra tegies. Also, th e 107-degree hear was ta king its toll on many of th e racers a nd their la p times sta rted to show it. Wit h j ust one hour and eight mi nutes left in the race, eBR overshot tur n three. slowing to a crawl before dropping the bi ke; th ey'd rejoin the race shortly. Team Yamaha of Go leta, Boin~o Racing, BCD Raci ng and e BR all received five-m in ut e penalties [or various reasons, costing eac h of them a co u p le of laps. . In th e las t hour of th e race, Boingo took the win, having co m pleted more laps (216) th an th e other teams. Big Cit y Raang was secon d , just one lap behind, w i th Vance & Hines on th e same lap (215) and traili n~ by just seco nds . Oms Young, riding for Big City had th is to say a bo ut the da y's event: " We tried to keep a pretty even pa ce. Later on in the da y th e heat star ted get to me, I got a little lightheaded a nd ca me in a la p early.' Loca ted in the moun tain s west of Co lorado Spri ngs , the Pikes Peak End uro has always been a favo rite [o r riders [ro m the reg ion. After a o ne year hiatus. The nor ma lly loo se gravelly trails of th e area were tran sformed into per fect traction by a storm tha t d u mped seven inches of heavy, wet snow ju st lour da ys befor e th e even t. Aaro n Danis and his crew p ut together an excel len t course th at to talled lOS actua l mi les for the A a nd B rid ers a nd 70 mi les lor the C riders. Amazi ngly , the co u rse was en tirely trail except fo r fou r miles of graded roa d. The Im gth y trail system proved to be especi a lly dem anding for the B and C riders as evidenced by th e nearly 50 percent DNF rate in th ose classes. Behi nd Kadlec th e co mpetition was fierce, with three riders tied at seven points. Da ve Li ndeman brat Ch ris Willba nk s a nd Kelb y Pepper atthe tie-breakers, Pep per was th e on ly rider of the th ree tied with Kad lec a t th e fourth check, but his 125 was clearly at a disadvantage o n some of th e uphi lls in th e la ter sect ions.
