Smith - LAWRENCEBU RG, IN : J ULY I An invasion Irom th e West fill ed th e O pe n A class with junior, pro and expert riders, as Troy Norris of Boise, Ida ho, went home th e winner. Loca l rider G rad y Phillips gra bbed the holeshot and managed to hold off th e big gu ns. The first half of th e race loo ked mor e lik e a Greyhound dog race with a solid pack chas ing th e rabbit severa l lengths ahead. Aa ron Hill led th e chase a nd began closing th e ga p o n Phillips. With I'u st three lap's of th e featu re remaining, H il ca ug ht Phillips i n turn two pu ll ing under and kn ock in g Phillips to th e o u tside so hard you co uld h ear th e bikes cla sh , a llo wing three o ther riders to gai n grou nd, leaving Grad y fourth. With o ne lap to go and Hill o ut in fron t, Grady pi cked off Cli nt Vahsh oltz for fourth pl ace. Then exiting turn four and head in g for th e nag, Hill lost contro l and n ew over the handbars with both feet in th e air. He fell just 20 feet sho rt of the nag and a rider rode over hi s leg and injured it. T roy Norris passed Hill and took th e nag for the win. Second acro ss th e lin e was Rex Fish er, while Phillips fini shed th ird. In 800c actio n Brian Knippenberg finished first despite being involved in a spectacul ar crash in th e heats . Sam Low too k seco nd followed by' Dan Dotson, Som e WIld rid ing took out half the field in the 125cc clas s. Ben Bellman took an early lead and was pickin g up real esta te when he went down in tu m two. Sulewski AQUASCO, MD , JUNE 17-18 Kawasaki-mounted Billy Schl ag walked aw ay from the competition with wins in both rnotos of the Stock a nd Modified classes in th e 125cc (12-15) division. . Clearly the fastest rider of th e da y, Schlag clocked a 15-second lead in the fir st mo to and never looked back. In moto two, Sch lag raced for th e hol esh o t and, once aga in , showed his speed with a 19second lead . He o pted no t to race the third mota with two first-place fin ishes under h is helt while hi s closest co m pe ri tic n of the da y, Mike Martin, rode hard and fast to tak e th e win. . . In the Stock class , Martin didn 't do well in the second rnoto with a ninth-pl ace finish but came back strong in moto three to ta ke first place. Scott Sh eak wh o was expected to pl ace near th e top, had to work hard for h is fifth-place o verall in th e Stock clas s and fourth overall in th e Modified class. Shan e La wso n was th e on ly o the r rider to take double cla ss wins cap turing the 85cc Stock and Modified 14-15 di visio ns . More th an 100 riders wh o qual ified at th e area qual ifiers regi stered to race th e regionals. Track condi tio ns were perfect in sp ite of th e two previou s ni ll"h ts of thundersh ow ers. Pres ton tops Sunrise GP By Terry Rezek ADELANTO, CA, JULY 2 The heat too k more toll on th e riders than did th e course a t today's CRC Grand Prix a t Sunrise Cycle Park. Mark Lippert had th e early lead in th e 80cc Novice class and he and Travis Preston fough t it out until lap seven wh en Preston got by him. Lippert faded rapidly after th at , finishing six th . Second went to Scott Johnson, but th e hest race of th e class was for fourth and fifth between Tracy Ash er a nd Chris Allen, wh o battled for the en tire 15 m inutes and fin ished only o ne length apart . Paul G ilmartin led th e Beginners all th e wa y to earn th at win. T ommy Pearl, Bob Millner and Hal Grady were tight in lap one of th e Old T imers ra ce, but Pearl pulled away steadi ly after that for an easy win. Gr eg Preston eventually got by Millner and Grady for second. The 500cc Beginners were led by Sco tt Adams right off the line and trailed by Kenny Watson. Watson took o nly one-and-a-half laps to get through th e pack and take the lead but T erry Volland had the better endura nce and took the win late in the race . J eff Rands came o ut of tum one in third and had the lead of th e 2500c Beginners hefore the end of lap one. Gr eg Cl ark got i t away from Volland in lap two and held it for two laps. On lap four Volland took the lead back for good and the overall lead as well, having passed the open bikes ju st momen ts before, Early 125cc Beginner leader Chris Garcia ga ve up the lead to Kris Keefer in lap two and Keefer went on for th e wi n, leav in g Garcia to fin ish third behind Roy "The Fl ying Smurf" Bremenour. In th ese lon ger races, the lighter bikes lik e th e 250s usually catch the Open class bikes before the race is half over. Not in today's Novi ce event. Kar l Allen took th e lead at th e dr op of the n ag and led for the en tire 15 m inutes. H e was so far ahead by midrace, he stopped for a water break a nd still won by more than a quarter-lap. The real ra cing was th e overall positions in th e 2500c class . Matt Wyckoff and Mike G iem fought each other all the wa y in the 2500c Novice and finished in that order. AUB URN, CA, J UN E 30 John H ouston, J r. o utrode Rock y Rob in son to turn o ne th en went on to pick up his seco nd Scra tch ma in victory at Gold Co untry Speedwa y. Mik e Kain took co ntrol o f th e Handicap main on lap three a nd cap tu red th e victory. With the seco nd h al f of the ·no r thern Ca lifor ni a spee dway season starti ng this weekend, Rohert Curry is just abo ut read y to order his new lea thers with th e number o ne o n th e back. Fo ur o the r rider s hav e a cha nce (Q catch Curry in points. but if he can rem a in co nsisten t Curry can be number o ne a t th e end of th e seaso n. The Scratch ma in looked pr o m ising as th e tapes new up with Houston o n the pole. Robin son in ga te two, Curry in three a nd Harl an Bast Jr. on the far o utsi de. By th e tim e th ey mad e it through turn one it was all over. Houston put thi s one away ear ly with a gr eat dr ive down th e back ch ute and was never headed for the four laps. Rob in son and Bast traded pl aces for one lap th en Robinson nailed down the runner-up spo t. Cu rry th en went aft er Bast. Bast said enough was enough and sh ut th e door on Curry. The two riders ban\led together o n th e stra igh t with Curry end ing in the dirt. H ouston went on to win hi s second Scra tch main thi s seaso n. When Mike Kain lined up for th e Handicap main som eone noticed tha t hi s gas cap was mis sing. Kain dashed to th e pits and almost m issed the start as it took longer th an expected to find th e mi ssin g top. With everyo ne ready Scott McN eil took off with th e ea rly lead as Bobby Hedde n foll owed. Kain was running in third and slipped past Heddon on lap two an d went after McN eil. Steve O rla ndi was in th e hunt d osing in on th e lead ers. O rlandi's problem was behind him though as Rob in son ·was co m ing through lik e a ga ngbus ter. On lap three Kain d isposed of McN eil and was trying to ge t some breath ing room. Orlandi moved i n to second with Robinson cl ose behind. With a clear tra ck Kain motored home to victory.
