Long takes Riverside YSRSO Road Race win By Dave Vinson RI VERSIDE, CA, J ULY 2 Mar k Lo ng top ped the YSR50 Stock Beginner class at the RMD / ASRA Road Race at Adams Kart Track in Riverside, Long ju mped into the lead followed by j im Dalton a nd Tony Alverez, Fourth.!'lace rider Yuichi Furukawa wasted no tim e 10 passi ng Alverez to take over third place . A lap la ter Furukawa passed Dalton and began to move on Lo ng . Alverez slipped by Dalt on to take third, as Furukawa moved further away . Lo ng held on to his lead an d crossed the line first foll owed by Furu kawa and Lo ng. Heat two saw Furukawa , Lon g and Alverez pull away togeth er with Fu rukawa exiting th e first corner in the lead with Alverez and Lo ng close behi nd. Long too k less tha n a lap to pass Alverez a nd bega n 10 reel in Furukawa. Alverez bega n a cha rge o f hi s own and repassed Lon g a nd started to pu sh Furukawa. He finall y slipped by a lter several lap s of handlebar -tohandlebar racin g. Alverez slowly pulled a way with Furu kawa a solid second and Long thi rd. The YSR50 Pro Modified class saw Mark McDon ald pull the holeshot with Dave Trager and Gary Drew close behind. Trage soon pa ssed and left McDonald and Drew to race C second. Drew was slowly mov ing in wh en or McDonald bail ed allowing Drew to move into seco nd. McDonald ge t back up in tim e to fini sh third. James jams to LACR MX win By Terry Rezek 20 PALMD ALE, CA, J UN E 25 Cu rt j ames wra pped up the Vet Int ermediate class win at LACR MX by taki ng adva ntage of Randy Anderson's misfortune in the second mota . After havin g won the openi ng rnoto over Ja mes, Anderson j u mped tolO the early lead In the second mota wit h J ames hot on h is tai l. The two riders set the pa ce as they diced for the lead . But following the seventh lap, Anderso n had dr opped ou t of sight and was later seen pushing hi s Yamaha back to the pits alter having run out of gas. .This gave James the mota win and overa ll. Danny Garb had the fastest reaction s in the 125cc Beginner cla ss by stealing l he holeshot in both motos. In the first moto Garb q u ickl y p ulled away and stre tched hi s lead into a six- second cus h ion by the midway point. Whil e Garb was cruising out in front, Kevin O'Brien was sneak in g up through the pack and soon too k over the number-two pos it io n. By lap seven, O 'Brien was noticably gai ni ng gro und on Ga rb, who look ed to be tir ing. By the last lap , O 'Brien was breathing down Gar b's back and soon fou nd the quick line aro und Garb for the win . Roy Bremenour fin ished the malo _ in third. On ce agai n, Ga rb jumped out into the lead a t the sta rt of the second moto , bu t p lowed th rou gh a soft berm a nd fell down . He quickly remo unted , but back in eig ht h place. Up front was Eddie Tanner who would take command a nd win the mota, bu t it was O 'Brien 's day. O 'Brien played it safe and cruised in second pl ace where he would fin ish an d take the overa ll win. Matott, Grimaldi ace Royal Mountain Motocross By Greg Nelson CAROGA LAKE, NY, J ULY 4 Two hundred riders spent the july 4th holida y bauling each o ther and a chall enging track. Mark Matott , comi ng back from retirem en t, used his experience and patience to win the Sen ior class. Spri ng City Cycle's Ed Downin g holeshot both motos of the Sen ior class. Each time Yamah a rider Mat ou was right behi nd . The pair set a blistering pa ce. Back in 'th ird was Bruce Stra tton, Sr. with AMA referee Duk e Finch closely following him. Down ing fou ght off Matott's many attem pts to pass. Finall y, on the last lap, Matott got by, taki ng the checkers fir st. Down ing settled for second bo th motos, Stra tto n finis hed th ird and Finch fourth . ' The 250cc Ama teur class belo nged to Paul Grimaldi. He hol eshot bo th motos and was never chall enged. Second pl ace fin ish er, Bill Safford didn 't have it qui te so easy. He had to come from mid pack each moto. Each lap he was a ble to pa ss two and three riders. Pars hall lands SDR ST win By Tom Blachek HARP URS VILLE, N Y, JU LY 1·2 Square Deal Riders M.e. host ed its first short track event of the season on Saturday, then hosted the 7th Annual Mid -Summer Madn ess Poker Run on Sunday . Saturday night. in Sen ior B action, Dou gla s Lent gra bbed a comforta ble lead off the star t follo wed by Willi am Warford and Rober Laviolette. By the th ird lap , Warford began to close in on Lent. On lap five, War lOrd du cked under Len t goi ng in to turn three to take the lead. Lent began to feel pressure from Lavi olette who made a last lap pa ss that moved Lent to th ird. it was a spirited battle between two friends who travel to the races together. The Open Expe rt final was a cake-walk for National Pro-Am points leader Conrad Parshall, as he jumped to the lead in the first turn of the first la p. Parshall was never pressured the en tire 10 laps because of the fighting o ver seco n d , third and fourth positions. Steve Longo held second until the sixth lap when he was passed by Kenny Dahlin . Lon go then had to hold off the ch allen~ of Tony Anderson. Anderson put Lon go 10 fourth and pulled side by side with Dah lin in the last turn of the last lap. Dahlin fin ished second by inches over Anderson, with Lo ngo a very close fourth. Kenny Coolbeth conti nued his winnin g ways by winni ng easily the l25cc Amateur and Min i classes. Coo lbeth ha s now won nine out of 10 finals th is season . On Sunday, the pa ce was leisurely over the scenic 133·m tle po ker run. Food was sup p lied a long with ga mes a n d awards, All 135 participants agreed it was a great ride. Mike McKinney sho wed that he can ride slower than most by cap turi ng the Slow Race win over short track ace Todd HUDler. To win a Slow Race. the rider must travel a speci fic distance slo wer than anyo ne else without putting a foot 10 the ground. The highlight of the day was the Bite-theWeen ie contest, To win , a motorcycle driv er and passenger mu st work well together. The object of the con test is to grab a mustard covered hotdo~ suspended in air. The driv er may not put hIS feet down, and the pa ssenger can not use his hands. The winners of the Bite-the-Weeni e contest were driver Gr egg McGowan and pa ssenger Brenda McGowan. There were ntany antique motorcycles on display during the day. Heibel hooks up to Finger Lakes MX win By Jim Vanderbeek CO LU MBIA, MO, J UN E 18-19 Ben Heibel totall y dom inated the l25ccYo uth Stoc k and Modified classes at the Loret ta Lynn 's Regional Qualifier MX a t Finger Lak es State Park . Heibel won a ll six mot os with ease. T his was the first tim e an AMA Region al Qualifier ha s been held in thi s part of the cou ntry for quite a wh ile. Riders from Florida, Californ ia, Oklahoma, Wiscons in, 'Michiga n and many other sta tes attended, Robbie Skag gs also doubled up in the Stock 7-11 and the Modified 9· 13 classes. After an eigh th-p lace finish in moto one of the Stock 7·11 cla ss, he fini shed stro ng with a 1·1 in motos two and thr ee. Other double class winners included T om Moock with strong rides in the 125cc C Stock and Modified classes. Eddi e Smil ey scored win s in both 250cc C Stock and Modified classes. Some of the best raci ng was in the 80cc 14, 15 classes. fn the Stock 14-15, Mack VanderBeek a nd Dou g Sto ne traded spots in mot o one with the overa ll goi ng to Mack Vander' Beek, In the Modified 14-15 class, Brandon Backues was the o ne to beat. There was close racing between Backu es, Stone, Vander Beek and j oll ey all around the track. Backu es won in mo to one and mota two for the overa ll.
