H e wait ed for assistance, fina lly receiving it from Oll e Ohlsson, the lon e Swed ish en try in th e event and a good friend of Hines'. "When we too k off again, we rode side-by-side to try to star out of each o ther's dust and we never should hav e done that," said Hines. " I was nervous, in a hurry, and not paying attention, and I h it a big roc k in th e ' m iddle of th e road a t abo ut 70 m p h." The resulting cras h broke Hines' collarbone and three of his ribs, and he suffered a mi ld concussion. He had the dubious distinction of being the first rid er to be carried away in the helicopter. After a two -day stay in a Lima hospital he headed home to heal. This-left th e respons ibility for a decent American fini sh in the hands of Sidney Dickson; a tree mov er from ' St. Michael s, Mary land. Dickso n 's last serious rally com pe titio n was in the , London (England ) to Sydney (Australia ) Marathon in 1968, a 1O,500-mi le car rally. "I proved what} wanted to prove' and I don 't need to try to hurt myself n ow . I had a good time;" said Dickson. . Of the other notable nam es in the · " DN F" colu mn , one in particuiar · stood out - Heinz Kinigadner, 250cc MX World Chainpion in '84 and '85 and a well -known Austrian wildman. Although Kini gadner had ,no previo us rall y experience, he was an immediate favorite for th e win. On th e same day Hines went down th e first full day of th e ra lly Kini gadner was smoking along a cliff-edge mountain road, while feel ing a l ittl e addled from th e altitude and figh ting h is way around someo ne else's dust cloud. When he broke o u t of the dust th e tra i l turn ed right , following a canyon into the edge of th e mountain, Kinigadner was .going too fast to ' make the turn. Forty-feet. across a deep cha sm was the road again; looping back on th e other side of th e can yon, so he did what any decent motocrosser wou lddo -:- he straightened up and jumped it. The bike cased out on the edg e of the road on th e other side , flipping'hi m over the ·bars and safely on to the roa d, while the bike dropped off the cliff. · · ' .
