Australian Malcolm Campbell was absent from the Canadian round of the World Superbike Series and the Brainerd, Minnesota, American round. According to a report in Australian Motorcycle News, Campbell reportedly was close to inking a deal with the Cabin Racing Grand Prix Team to ride the injured Bubba Shobert's machine, and was so confident he would be signed that he did not send an entry to Canada for the Superbike race because it conflicted with the Austrian GP. Instead of Campbell, Brit Rob McElnea got the the Cabin bike ride. Another missing-in-action Australian was Paul Lewis, whose World Championship Superbike Series deal reportedly fell apart when he blew up all three of his race motors at the first meetin g.
