·M ike Kiedrowski was the top money-earner on the night as he took home $10.000 for his w in in t he first-ever 12 5 cc Camel Shoot-Out. Erik Kehoe rounded out the top 10 finish ers. Cooper wasn't the only non-starter amongst the factory stars as Suzuki's Johnny O'Mara was also a no-show. O'Mara inj ured a knee while testing a t his private track in Simi Valley, Cal ifornia, the Tuesday prior to the race. H is lock on fourth place in the points standings, however, was secure. In what could be called a mild upset, Honda's Mike Kiedrowski came away from th e Colesium $10,000 richer as he stunned Team Yamaha's Damon Bradshaw ($3000) with a come-from-behind win in the $25,000 l25cc Camel Shoot-Out, a race pitting the top 10 l 25cc riders from the East against the top 10 from the West. Yamaha's Mike La Rocco ($2000), Suzuki's Jimmy Gaddis ($800) and Honda-mounted Larry Ward ($650) rounded out the top five finishers. . One of the pre-race favorites in the l25cc Shoot-Out, Kawasaki 's J eff Matiasevich, crashed out early and finished 14th. Matiasevich, however, had earlier run away and hid from the field in the fina l round of the l 25cc Western Regio nal main event, beating Larry Ward and Gaddis-" . 250cc Heats Kehoe led the first of three, eight-' lap heat races on the fast , rather dull layou t - a track tha t featured a whoop-and-jump-riddled straightaway, but one that had its 'corners few and far between; Lechien was second into turn one, but the Kawasaski pi lot soon moved past Kehoe to take over the lead . The race quickly turned into a Lechien runaway, but fortunately for the 40,125 fans in attendance the battle behind him was a good one. Todd DeH oop and Kehoe battled Ior, the majority of the race, with DeHoop getting the nod at the finish line. Suzuki-mounted Ray Sommo and Honda-mounted Fred Andrews took the final two direct transfers to the final. The second heat race saw Holland and Ward side -by-side in the first corner, a left-bander leading to a set of triples. And it was Holland emerging as the leader on the exit of the first turn. The Honda rider started to open up a lead on Ward, who . in turn was feeling pressure from Dymond and Shaun Kalos. Lap three, however, saw Ward fight back, and the multi-time champion was soon tailing Holland ' closely. Ward made his move on the fifth lap, in the left-hand corner at the top of the second peristy le jum p - one of the few p laces on the track that ended up being a prime passing spot. Once in front, Ward sailed to the win in what woul d be the quickest heat of the night. Holland held on for third with Dymond edging Kalos for third. T yson Voh land and Terry Fowler (d ue ' to the fact that six riders transfer directly from the evening's fastest heat race) took the final two direct transfer spots. " It's a little hard to pass, but you can go inside, ou tside thro ugh the peristyle," Ward, a four-time winner in 1989 said. The 27-year-old also won $1000 in gold coins from the Coors Brewing Company for winning the Coors Extra Gold Extra . Effort Award; it was the first time all season that Ward had won the award. H eat three saw a Larry "Brooks holeshot, but Stanton was in the lead by the time the pack reached the ' The last round of the 125cc Western Regiona ls gets started as Matiasevich (2 6 ). Tallon Vohland(711) and Gaddis (39) lead the way. start/finish line jump on the opening lap. Stanton ran away and hid, leading by over six secon ds at the halfway mark. A good battle ensued for second, first between Dub ach and Brooks, and finally between "R o n n ie Tichenor and Dubach. In the end, though, it was Tichenor taking second with Dubach third. Keith Bowen and Brooks rounded out the top five finishers. Semis , The first of two, six- lap semis saw Kawasaski-rnounted Brian Manley stealing the .h o lesh o t, followed closely by Yamaha-mounted J im Holley and Fisher. By the second lap, however, Fisher had jumped to the lead as the three battled over the two di rect transfer spots. Fisher ended up pulling away from the dicing duo, and Manley eventually go t the better of Holley for second place. Suzuki-mounted Mike Pascarella emerged fro m semi number two with a gate-to-flag victory over Kawasakimounted Jeff Frisz. Gordon Ward ba ttled ferociously with Phil Lawrence for third place, but Lawrence crashed in the final set of whoops before the start/finish line, handi ng Ward third p lace. .Last Chance Qualifier Holley led from the start in the six-lap Last Chance Qualifier, pushing his Yamaha into the lead in the first corner and holding off Gordon Ward for five laps. Ward ended up crashing on the final lap, giving second place to Dean Matson, and remounted to finish fifth. For his efforts, Holley would be the 21st rider in the final and would end u p finishing 16th in the 20-lap affair. . Main Holland and his Honda led the 21rider field into turn one. The Ker- 7
