·A lan Carter put his John Lassak Racing 250cc Aprilia in the ARRA
Formula One winners circle at Willow Springs International Raceway.
Southern Californ ian Chuck Graves is on a roll in the WERA F-USA
Nationals. having won both rounds so far at Portland and Willow Springs.
Formula USA racers .
set records at PIR RR
B·y Russ Cazier
PORT L AN D, O R, MAY 21
Chuck Graves won the For mula USA race and $1600, Joe
Pittman took home the most
trophies, Alan Schwen wo n
every class he ente red .and Kurt Hall
and Graves fractured, brok e' and then
pu lverized the two -w heel track
record at the Oregon Motorcycle
Road Racing Association's second
meet of the season at P ort la n d
International Raceway.
A host of top-f light road racers
stayed over after the WERA/EBC
Six-Hour Endurance race on Sat urday to contest Formula USA an d the
OMRRA Spri nt races. The tra ck
record, 1:12.0, set in 1986 by Keith
Pinkstaff ridig a GSXR750 Superbike on a slightly lon ger (.005 mi le)
and rougher track, was clea rly in
jeopardy. Hall, of the H uman Race
Team , and Paul Bray and Mike
Smith of Team Suzuki were cra nking
out consistent lap, times in the :14s
and: 13s in traffi c"'d uring the endurance race.
So, wh en the 1000cc and l lOOcc
Superbikes screamed away from the
F-USA starting line, the clicking of
stop watches so unded like an invasion of crickets. Graves won the drag
race to turn one and led the first three
laps on his 1100cc-plus Suzuki, but
Hall got by on la p four and led every
lap th ereafter excep t th e one tha t
cou n ted, when Graves got under him
in turn four to tak e th e checkered
flag with Hall a heart beat behind on
th e HRT Yamaha FZRIOOO enduran ce bik e.
A consensus of stopwatches
showed Graves with a best lap of
1:10.92 and Hall at 1:10.95 - a
hundredth of a second on a handheld stopwa tch is lik e virtue amongst
hookers - mu ch discus sed but of
lillie importance - so th e official!
unofficial track record is now jointly
held a t I:10.9 by Graves and Ha ll.
" I love this track," said Graves,
who's sponsored by Dunlop, Kerker ,
Fox Shocks, Shoei, Van Nuys Suzuki
and Fifth Avenue Seltzer.
Keith Pinkstaff showed his old
form in 750cc Superb ike, winning
aft er a race-long duel wi th Do ug
Renfrow and eclipsing h is own
former tra ck record, but well off the
pace set by th e larger displacement
Superbikes pi loted by the USA Racers.
In 750cc Prod uctio n, J oe Pillman
had a six-second lead over Bray at
th e h alfwa y point, with Smith
farther back in third, but Smith
cranked it up and passed his teammate, then got by Pittman on the
eigh th lap of the 1O-lap race. Pill man
had a race-long dice with David
Devea u in 600cc Superb ik e, bu t
managed yet another last-lap pass for
the win.
Pill man 's . Open Production win
was a little easier as he led it from
th e gree n flag, but Georgians Smith
and Bray were never more than a few
feet behind.
T he combined heat of 450cc P rod uction, L igh tweig h t Superb i ke
(formerly Open Single GP) and
500cc ~ nd 2!'Occ Vintage saw some
unusual action. The 450cc Production class left first in a multi-wave
start, but by th e fifth lap the 450cc
Prodders were lap ping into the back
of the second wave, and J erry Jones,
turning 1:22s on a 500cc Yamaha
single, was lapping into the bac k of
the first wave. Mike Ph ill ip s' scoring
trew had no trouble sorting this out,
but the large spectator crowd may
-have found it con fusing.
