The event became a total was hout when a thunderstorm hit the Illinois State Fair: grounds early Monday morning. The race has been rescheduled for July 16. Australia n Mich ael Doohan (Hon) earned his first-ever rostrum position with a third place finish . Pier-Francesco Chili (Hon) and Christian Sarron (Yam) rounded out the top f ive finishers. Freddie Spencer (Yam) finished ninth; Randy Mamola (Cag) 12th; and Texan Kevin Sc hwantz (Suz) suffered a crankshaft failure with four laps to go while racing with the leading duo. . Rainey now leads Lawson. 91-78. in the championship chase. Sarron is third w ith 58 points. Spaniard Sito Pons (H on) won his third 250cc G P of the season in West Germany on May 28. Pons narrowly defeated West German Reinho ld Roth (Hon) and Japan's Masahiro Sh imizu (Hon). Pons leads the championship' chase by 29 points over JP. Ruggia, seventh in Germany, 107-78. Venezuelan road racer Ivan Palazzese, 27. was killed in the German 250cc GP . Palazesse was in volved in a second-lap crash w ith Fabio Barchitta. American Trampas Parker (KTM) captured his second overall win of the World Championship 125cc MX Series in the May 28 Belgian GP,by winning the first moto and finishing second in the final moto. Fellow American Mike Healey (KTM ). who tallied 2-3 moto scores. finished second overall. Rounding out the top f ive were Italy's Alessandro Puzar (Suz). American Bobby Moore (KTM) and Italy's Massimo Contini I (Cag). Holland's Dave Strijbos (Suz). who was leading the point standings go ing int o the Belgian round. missed the event due to an injured knee. Parker now leads the points chase with 170 points. and .Puza r is second with 145. Former 125cc MX World Champion Strijbos is scheduled to have his knee operated on during the week of May 30, an operation that could put the Dutchman out of racing for at least two months. " I cannot continue like this, " the 21-year-o ld Strijbos said. "I cannot race fast enough to win the championship an d I don't want to be second again. " Frenchman Jean-Michel Bayle (Hon) won both motos in Sverepec. Czechoslovakia. to cla im the overall win in round three of t he World Championship 250cc MX Series on May 28. Second place in the Czechoslovakian GP went to Holland 's John Van den Berk (Yam) via a 3-4 tally. while third went to Holland's Gert Jan Van Doorn (Suz) who posteda 2 8 score. American Broc Glover (KTM) was fifth overall with a 72 score. Great Britain's Jeremy Whatley (Suz). who took fifth in the first moto and placed out of the top 1 5 in the second. still leads the series point standings with 67 followed by Van den Berk (64). ltaly's Michele Fanton (6 0 ) and Bayle (60). 'T wo days later at th e sam e site in Tennessee, Spain 's Jorde Tarres (Bet) topped round four of the World Championship Observed Trials Series. Second place went to Italy's Diego Bosis (Apr) , with Frenchman Thierry Michaud (Fan ), Finland's Tomi Ah vala (Ap r) a n d Italy 's Donato Miglio (Fan) rounding out the top five. Garth Sweetland (Hon) was the overall w inner of the American Desert Racing Association 's 12th Annual Prescott 100. held May 28 in Prescott. Arizona. Jeff Darland (KTM) f inished second overall and Scott Davis (Hon) captured thin! . 2 Australian Jeff Leisk (H o n) went 3I and cap tured his first -ever World Championship 500cc MX Series overall victory in R u skeasa n ta , Finland, May 28. Second overall in , the Finnish GP went to Belgian Georges J obe (H on ) witha 3-2 tally , while th ird was taken by Holland's Kees Van der Ven (KTM) via a 16 tally. Rou nding out the top five were Great Bri tain's Kur t Nicoll (Kaw) and the series points leader Eric Geboers (Hon ) of. Belgium. Geboers maintains a two-point lead over Dave Thorpe (Hon), who finished sixth on the day, in the series point standings , 140-138, while Nicoll is third with 113. Leisk is now fourth with III points.
