George Ho lland (1) became the first repeat w inner of the ser ies in t he 125cc class J;ly going 3-1 . Hl!re .he leads Mike Kiedrowski in moto one . the stan hill and entered th e first tum near last. Kiedrowski a lso got off to a poor stan due lo the incident. "I got hooked up with Damon (Bradsha w), th en hit somebody's rear tire in the first turn and went down ," said Schmit, who suffered a twisted knee in the fall. Holland wok the lead on the opening lap and began pulling away, whil e Bradshaw charged all th e wa y up to fourth by the end of th e first lap. A short tim e la ter he' was third, running in a tight group with Cooper, Matiasevich and Jimmy Gaddis for a couple of laps. Bradshaw passed Cooper on the fourth lap th en began to close on Holland, bringing the other three with him. Gaddis was the ' first to drop back, but he was well ahead of th e battle for sixth betw een Suzuki teamm ates T y Da vi s a n d Todd DeHoop. A few la ps later, Bradshaw was on th e rear wh eel of H olland, and after a lap of pressuring th e H ond a pilot he found hi s way into fir st. Matiasevic h began to slip 0 [[ the p ace sli gh tly a nd Cooper got a wa y, while DeHoop got the upper ha nd in his sq ua bble with Davis. For severa l laps Bradsha w, Holland a nd Cooper stayed together, then o n lap 12 both H olland a nd Cooper slip ped by th e Yamaha pilot. " He had ca ug h t me a nd had better lines," exp lained Holland. " I followed him. to pi ck th em up and passed him with a few laps to go. He was going fast er the first part of the race , though. " " I got off to a bad stan and had to charge," Bradshaw said. " When 1 got out front 1 was tens e and made mistakes. 1 didn't want to throw it away, and figured the best thing to do wa.~ to get some points and not crash. Bradshaw fell 0[[ the pace as he rode conservatively, not only for the po ints b ut also lo pamper h is sore tai lbo ne he bruised while practicing a week earlier. Cooper couldn't close the gap on Holland and ended up five seconds behi nd at the finis h. . Matiasevich took fourth just out of the reach of Gaddis, while DeHoop charged for a close sixth. LaRocco and Kiedrowski battled to the end for 7·8. After winning t he first' 125cc moto, Bradshaw reeled in Ho lland f or f irst in round two, but was repassed and ended up third in the moto. Lec hien (4) leads Wa rd (1) and Johnny O'Mara (2 0) to the first t urn at the start of the second 250cc moto. " I was reall y pushing hard, ca ug h t George and messed up in a corner a nd he got away," said Cooper. " All that charging and 1 lost it." 250cc Je[[ Ward put his Tom Morgantuned Kawasaki into the lead of mow one, but teammate Lechien quickly got by. Stanton, Dennis Hawthorne, Fred Andrews and Dan n y Storbeck followed. A few turns later, Ward crashed on a rolling-ju mp-filled downhi ll and Hawthorne went down with him . " Ron went sideways, and 1 had to hesitate," explained Ward. " I lost momentum, the front end stuck and pitched me over the bars. Din was packed in my silencer so 1 had to unclog it, then 1 stopped lO straighten the bars and get the din out of my goggles.' During the first few laps Lechien gained a few seconds on Stanton as Andrews worked up to third, closely followed by Mike Fisher. Tom Carson was next over Jeff Frisz and O 'Mara, whose inside start line choice backfired when he got squeezed 0[[ in the first turn. "The din was harder packed on the inside," said O ' Ma ra. "I got out of the gate well but then got pinched of£." . By the fourth lap Stanton bega n closing the ga p between himself a nd Lech ien, while Andrews fough t off Fisher. O ' Mara had moved up to fifth and was engaged in a close battle with Micky Dymond, w ho had moved up fro m a poor start. Stanton continued to close and took the lead from Lechien at the halfway point, while Fisher finall y passed Andrews and left him to O'Mara, who also found it hard to pass the privateer. " H e's difficult to pass, it's like he has eyes in the back of his head," sa id O'Mara. " Wherever you go he's there." O 'Mara did fin ally g et by Andrews, but by then Fisher was gone with third. Dymond had crashed and had to Slop to straighten out his front end, so the top five were set with Stanton taking the wi n 13 seco nds ahead of Lechien, Fis her was a distant third, well ahead of O'Mara and Andrews. Shaun Kalos battled by Doug Dubach for sixth, while Keith Bowen was a close eighth. . "I made a few mistakes within two laps," said Lechien.
