Jones AUBURN, CA, MAY 12 Rocky Robinson took the victory in the Saatch main while Steve Orlandi blasted to another Handicap main win {or the second week in a row at Gold Country Speedway. Robinson, sponsored by Maxima Oil, H&:S Cycles, Bell and A8cA Racing, pulled the pole position as they lined up {or the Saatch main. When (be gates went up it was an even start with Robinson and Steve Martin in a major tussle as they hit the first turn. Robert Curry paused brieny then moved in between the two riders, pressing Martin farther to the outside. Robinson shot OUl olturn two {irst with Curry holding a sligbt edge over Martin. By the end o{ lap one Robinson was really nying and no one was going to catch him. Curry pulled up close a couple o{ times and when he did Robinson just turned up the wick and pulled away. Robinson was long gone, with Curry, Manin and Solis {ollowing at the finish. {n the Handicap main Bill Hermant took the early lead with Steve Orlandi and Joe Leduc trying to chase bim down. Orlandi, sponsored by Abor Tree Surgery, Orlandi Concrete and AJ Towing, shot by Hermant on lap two, taking the lead {or good. Leduc sem Hermant back another position as he moved in behind the speeding Orlandi. Mike Solis moved up and pressed Leduc {or the second spot. When the white nag came out Orlandi had it made with Solis and Leduc providing all o{ the action. Solis slipped inside to take the funner-up spot. Leduc came OUL o{ turn {our a little wide and when Charlie Venegas and John Houston raced home Houston's from wbeel caught Leduc's rear, sending Houston into the wall at the finish line. In Lhe Division Two main Ron Porteous and Bob Collier {ought each other {or a lap as each held the lead. Finally Poneous broke free and raced away {or the win. Dominick 18 MEAD, CO, MAY 7 Laramie, Wyoming's Aaron Turner posted exciting wins in both GTO Race o{ the Rockies and Open Superbike at the opening round o{ the 1989 Mountain Roadracing Association (MRA) season at Colorado's newest {acility, Mountain View Motorsports Park. Riding his UK Racing-sponsored Suzuki GSXRllOO, Turner came o{{ the line fourth behind Cesmat, Guy aausen and Utah's Chris Gardner-in the Race o{ the Rockies, the MRA's {eature race. Cesmat was able to stretch out a com{onable lead while the other three riders diced back and forth {or second, third and fourth places. Alter piclting o{{ aaUseD and Gardner, Turner set his sights on Cesmat. aocked at an uno{{jcial track record o{ 1:06, Turner chased down Cesmat, weaving in and out of lapped tra{fic, and made his move when Cesmat got trapped, behind a group o{ slower riders, in the ugbtest part of the track. Barnesr.!acks beat the rain at "'oroso RR By Joe McKay WEST PALM BEACH, FL, APR. 30 Mike Barnes captured the GTU 50-Miler Endurance, Middleweight Superbike, Middleweight GP, and finished second in Middleweight Superspon and the $1000 Shoot-OUl, on his CBR 600 Honda Hurricane at Moroso MOLOrsports Park. Donald Jacks, running at Moroso ror the first Lime in several months, ~ot back into his winning form by taking wins In Unlimited Superbike and Heavyweight Superbike. Barnes is running right on track and proving with each event that he can lJ1n with the best. Throughout the mostly wet conditions at Moroso, he continued his winning ways by beating the likes o{ Billy Kelly, Mark Foster, Newton Heston and many others. In the Middleweight Supersport race, Barnes lost to Jim Pennington by a bike length at the line. His only other defeat was to Miami road race veteran John Long in the ShootOUL Long was running a GSXRllOO Suzuki and Barnes was riding his 600cc Honda. Barnes also finished ahead o{ Rick "The Flying Cop" Shaw and his Yamaha FZRlOOO. Mark Chin and Rick Herndon battled early in the GTO 50-Miler with Chin pulling out a big lead at the end. Jones NAPA, CA, MAY 13 Mike Delacy roared to victory over Robert Curry in the Scratch main at Napa Speedway. When the tapes went up Delacy, sponsored by Interlin, Maier, Celestial Systems and Napa Cycle Rider Supply, new out o{ the pole position and into turn one with the lead. Delacy drifted wide, creating a bonleneck {or the other three riders. Steve Martin tried the inside as they shot out o{ turn two, but Delacy hooked up first and took the best line down the back chute. Paul Orlandi, still on the outside, pulled alongside the others until he ran out o{ room, scraped the wall and had to back of£. Curry shot past Martin into second with a great move and went after Delacy. Alter twO laps Delacy had put this one away as Curry couldn't get dose and Martin and Orlandi were having their own problems. At the £inish it was Delacy breezing LO victory over Curry, Martin and Orlandi. Steve Orlandi, sponsored by Abor Tree Surgery, Orlandi «Onerete and AI Towing, took the lead in the Handicap main and was never headed {or the six-lap a{£air. Charlie Venegas was able LO close in {or a lap or so but faded as others wanted bis position. Mike Solis tried the outside around both Venegas and Orlandi then £aded a\ the traction was just not there. Rohen Curry moved in to put some pressure on Venegas, and finally moved past him but it was too late to catch Orlandi. Mark Squadrito had to {ollow Shane Loessberg {or a couple o{ laps in the Division Three main but Squadrito's experience paid o{{ as he raced past for the lead then cruised home with an easy victory. John Pierce was second after dueling with Jerome Heiberger {or most o{ the race. After one lap in the Division Two main Doug Mi~nano was in the lead and he picked up his hrst victory this season. SDaldin. storms Clarks Branch MX By Clay Light ROSEBURG, OR, MAY 13 Monty Spalding won two classes during Motocross Northwest-sanctioned motocross racing at Clarks Branch Raceway. Spalding, sponsored by Umpqua Power Sports, Optimal and O'Neal, won the 125 and 250cc Pro classes to stand among 20 class overall winners at the completion o{ the day. SpaldlOg, who recently began a comeback after an injury earlier this year, jurn~ out front o{ the 125cc Pro class and had his hands {uJl with Suzuki rider Ron Milligan, but in the end Spalding prevailed {or a- mOLO one win, MOLO two was much the same as Spalding held o{{ Milligan's advanced LO Lake the win. Also combined was a good-sized pack o{ intermediate riders, led by Yamaha-Honda o{ Roseburg-sponsored Chad Berry. Berry trailed the pro duo in both moLOS to capture the overall ahead o{ Kevin Yeager and Kip Mast. Several motos later Spalding and Milligan were at it again, this time aboard 250s. Spalding once again had the upper hand and carded a moLO win while MillIgan and Rick Bault {ollowed. Milligan did all he could to relegate Spalding to second in the second mOLO, but in the end, the local speedster won out in a heated banle. {n the 250cc Intermediate class Yamahamounted Yeager made up {or his runner-up showing in the 125cc ranks by acing the second moto to net the overall win ahead o{ Steve Nelson, winner of the first moto, and Scott Lewis, In the 250cc Beginner class, Shaun Davis won witb 1-] talljes. Davis' closest competition came {rom Larry Howard in the first moto and Jay McGraw in the second. Both riders, however, had troubles posting a similar finish in their other motos, allowing Jason Lewis to capture second overall via 33 finishes. Rounding out the top five were Howard (2-4), McGraw (5-2) and Susan Smith, an ex-dirt track Expert, making a racing comeback after retiring {rom IT several years ago.
