Cameron dobbers 'em at Carlsbad MX By David Procida CARLSBAD, CA, MAY 6 Vet Beginner Cam Cameron pulled off a Couple of moto wins to take the overall viClOry today at Saturday Carlsbad MX. In molO one. Kawasaki pilot John Tookey \ook the holeshot with Mission Yamaha's Cameron, Jerry Link. and David Anthony holding off the pack. Up front. Tookey was running away from everyone, while behind him. Cameron had broken free of traffic and was now picking up the pace. Anthony put his Cagiva 125 into high gear, passing Link's YZ and was now in pursuil o[ Cameron'5 YZ250. As the laps clicked off, the gap berween first and second began to shrink, while leaving Anthony alone in third. Link was on tile bubble holding off the charge from RM250mounted Ralph Osborne and David Fava. On the whIle Oa~ap, Cameron caught up with Tookey and n to look for a way around the 10<500 ri er. For over 3/4 of the last lap, Cam<;ron dogged his advisary and then with two comers left, dove inside of Tookey taking the win away with the checkered flag in sight Behind Cameron and Tokey. Anthony finished in third, followed by Link and Osborne. . Moto two saw a Cameron holeshot with Antftony and Tookey hot on his trail. Anthony went wide in a corner allowing Tookey to drive by on the tight inside line, while Link was, once again, holding down fourth with Fava, Osborne and Scott Davis all in the hunt for Link's slot. With Cameron pulling away with the lead, Anthony was hunting down Tookey's Open bike with the Italian quarter liter rocket stickin~ his front tire inside of the big KX time and ume again. A short distance behind. Link was now alone with the other three riders left to fight over the remaining positions. Cameron was relaxing in his solitary point poshion. backing off his pace a notch. Anthony used a tight switch-back section to sneak under Tookey and then lit out for Cameron. A straightaway separa,ed the pair and the gap was decreasmg quickly, but not fast enough as Cameron 'ook the checkered wi th room to spare. Along with the win weOl the overall. with Anthony edging out Tookey's 2-3 to the KX rider's 3-2. Fourth went 10 Link with Fava rounding out the top five slots. Results 80 BEG; 1. Jones NAPA, CA, MAY 6 Napa's season opener came a few weeks early along with a wider back straight as promoter Dennis Robinson and the new members of the Town and Country Fairgrounds Board reached some new agreements. After 10 years at Napa, Robinson was delighted with the new board decisions that allowed him to have a longer season and to improve the tiny Napa track. Steve Martin wasted little time in trying out lhe exlra room when exiting turn two as be blasted h:is way to a Scratch main win over crowdIavorite Mike Delacy. Rory Rundle held off a late charge by Mike Parsons for his victory' in the Handicap main. Martin was on the pole next to Gary Solis as they lined up for the start. After visiting with Bubba Shobert in the hospital Wednesday, Martin had dedicated his weekend of racing to the speedy recovery of his friend's injuries and was really pumped up to pick up a victory. As the green came on Solis hooked up first and shot out of the gate. Martin was able to stay close en0"tlh to keep Solis from diving down to the insIde rail. As they left turn one, Solis could not find the needed traction and had to watch Martin take the lead. Mike Delacy starting from gate three and Rocky Robinson followed close behind. Martin kept tight to the rail and finished the first lap by shooting farther ahead and taking the lead for good. Delacy working hard on the outside. finally made it past Solis and chased after Mart4t.. After a lap Martin had his head down streaking around the oval determined not to make a mistake. Delacy could not get close enough to put any pressure on Martin, so relaxed in the runner-up spot As the checkered came out it was Martin with the win, Delacy, Solis and Robinson following. McKenzie wIns Lovelock GP By Ron Dillon LOVELOCK, NV, APR. 29-30 Ken McKenzie took first overall at the inaugural Lovelock Grand Prix, narrowly edging out Duke Dowell. The event featured a 26-mile loop which featured sand dunes, tight washes and rwo-and-a-half miles of fast pavemenL The weekend started out on Saturday morning with a one-hour mini bike fourwheeler event, run on a sandy, five-mile loop. C riders then lined up for three 26-mile laps, and despite the fast, 55-minute laps, l25cc Yamaha-mounted Matt Cranford took .the overall win with Steve Casper and Cliff Townsend right behind. On Sunday the A and B racers lined up for the mass-start heading right into some rough sand dunes. From the drop of the banner it was Dowell, McKenzie and Greg Searle in a tight lead formation. Right behind were l25cc Suzuki riders Ed Marchini, Derrick Personette and Kevin Brown. Personeue bailed hard a few miles out and DNF. Dowell was out front and pushing hard and it became obvious that he wasn't stopping for gas. This . proved to be a huge advantage, as the rest of the top 10, including McKenzie had to pit. McKenzie slowly gained on Dowell, and at the end of lap two when both riders had to . pit, squeaked by for the lead. Dowell chased hard for the rest of the day, but McKenzie held on to win by 20 seconds. Greg Searle took third overall just ahead of the screaming 125 of Ed Marchini, with Kevin Brown in fifth and first Open A. • Results SATURDAY O/A; 1. Matt Cranford; 2. Steve Casper; 3.
