Gary Wagner (1 0), Carl Gazafy (5) and Greg Martinez (53) lead the Junior Vet Novice class charge up DeAnza's start hill. Randy Shank (2R) held off Ken Coolbeth (32) and Robert Miller on the final lap for the win in the 125cc class at Pine Grove. Varnes vktorlous at Pine Grove ST By Len Breech PINE GROVE, PA, MAY 7 Led by Kevin Varnes' first win as an Expen, Lbe Lbree local riders who claimed National liLies last year each claimed victories at the Flying Dutchmen's first shon track of this season. With Lbe exception of Georgie Price's win in Lbe Open Expert class, Lbe oLbers were in a class higher than Lbe one Lbey can wear Lbe number one in, wiLb Randy Shank raking the closely fought 125cc final after finishing a close second in Lbe 85cc final to Ricky Winseu and Varnes easily outdistanced Lbe 250cc Expert class. After Varnes won one of Lbe twO 250cc Expert heats, Lbe final figured to be much harder LO dominate. But Lbe young rider put his Jim Varnes·tuned, Penn Stale Cycles· sponsored Yamaha in a quick, large lead over Price, cousin Mike Varnes, Mike Sponseller and Todd Hurse While Kevin Varnes 3JId Price were gradually pulling away, a close battle over third went on between Mike Varnes, Sponseller and Mike Klopp, that went to Klopp. Price dominated the Open class throughout its two Slarts. He look the lead from Tom Majeski, Bob Sweeten, Sponseller and Dave Lesniak and ran away from Majeski and Lbe rest of the lield. Lesniak worked his way into third during Lbe Lbird lap, but he unloaded hard entering the third tum the following lap, bringing out a red Oag. On ,the restart, Price quickly re·established his lead on his D8cS Cycles/Dorsey Builders ROlaX in second. The race was SlOpped after anoLber lap had been completed when Dallas Baer gOt stuck over the bars and weill into the tires on turn two. With that, me race was called complete. Shank and Ken Coolbeth hooked up eadier in a pair of hotly contested linals that ran back to back. Ricky Winseu, Shank and CoolbeLb quickly put a few yards over Todd Winseu and Jerry Alexander as Lbe 85cc Experts buzzed away. They ran most of the six lap final wiLb less than a foot between them. As Lbey were completing Lbe fifLb lap, Shank tried to slip under Ricky Winseu, but LOuched him slightly, losing a length or so, rnal Winseu used as a cushion. Right after Lbe Oag, Shank and CoolbeLb jumped on their l25cc mounts, and it looked like a replay of the previous race, wiLb Robert Miller replacing Winseu in the tight front trio. CoolbeLh took Lbe lead initially, but Shank moved into Lbe lead coming off Lbe fourth turn at the end of Lbe first lap. While Lbe positions stayed the same, there was a lot of side-by·side racing, with Shank keeping his Trans-Am Cycles·sponsored Kaw,asaki in frot for the win. Randy Buzzard looked like he was going LO take Lbe 250cc Amateur final as he q uickl y jumped in front of Rich Mellinger, Merv Sensenig and Chuck Buchanan. Sensenig and Buchanan displaced Mellinger on the second lap, wiLb Sensenig challenging Buzzard for Lbe lead, which he finally took as they came off the fourth turn on Lbe fourLb lap. Darryl Raer Slatted Lbe Open Amateur race with a quick lead over Dennis Aungust, Phil Libhan and Jim Haldenman. With Sensenig moving into the lail-gunners position, it became a four·way hattie for second. The baule brought them up to Raer in Lbe dosing laps, with Aungust nudging his way under Raer as Lbey came off Lbe final turn to talc.e the win. R....1ts 55: 1. Tom Skethway rvamt 2. Wa~rwalsat DeAnza Motocross By David Procida SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAY 7 Gary Wagner put his Maxima/Covina Yamaha-sponsored YZ250 into Lbe winner's circle in Lbe newly created Junior Vet Novice (25-29 year-<>ld) class. Wagner took Lbe holeshot in moto one wiLb Lbe entire Novice field, along wiLb Lbe Junior Vet Intermediates and Experts behind him. Running only a couple of bike lengLbs behind was Kawasaki·mounted Bob Kevz, Greg Martinez and B.]. Lehn. Holding off a large pack of riders only a heartbeat to the rear of Lbe lead pack was Suzuki pilot Chuck Gunter. As Lbe moto progressed, Wagner began to roost away from the competition. KevI was on the gas but couldn't stay with Wagner's torrid pace. Coming up Lbrough Lbe pack to challenge Gumer was Alhambra Honda's Jeff YQung. By mid-molO, Young had forced his way past Lbe Suzulc.i rider and was setting his sights on Lbe lead pack. Slicing skillfully past Lehn and Martinez, he closed on Kevz's KX. The two diced for Lbe lauer part of Lbe moto until Young slipped under and around Kevz. Wagner was untouchable at Lbis point and took Lbe checkered a lap later. Young finished ahead of Kevz for second, while rounding out Lbe top five were Martinez and Greg Keirn. Moto two saw Wagner get squeezed out at Lbe LOp of Lbe hill and Kevz come out on LOp of Lbe Junior Vet Novice pack, followed by Steve Hale. Wagner moved up through Lbe ranks quickly and took Lbe lead at Lbe bollom of Lbe hill, slipping by Kevz just before Lbe corneJ'. Young was nOl aboUl to lel lhe Yamaha rider get away and was following Wagner's paLb through Lbe pack. But Kevz held Young back. Behind Young, Keirn had closed the gap, making it a three·way battle for second. While this was going on, Wagner misjudged a tricky sedton of Lbe rraek and dropped back LO fourLb. Undaunted, he began his charge, passing Keirn and Lben Young, closing on Kevz once again. Sho"'y after, Lbe lead once again, belonged to Wagner. From that point on Wagoer went virtually unchallenged, taking Lbe win for the second time. Young again finished second, completing Lbe first two overall positions. Keirn finished third.
