OH, APR. 22·23 Vintage trials competition LOok on a whole new meaning with rounds twO and three of the AHRMA National Vintage Trials Cham· pionship Series in Toronto, Ohio. The 52 competiLOrs (27 Modern class bikes and 25 British bikes) were given the oppor· lunjty to ride some of the most beautiful and challengin~ Vintage Trials terrain in the eastern United States. The Ohio Valley BSA Owners Club laid out I I split line challengiog sections, coo· nected by a two mile loop that looked like ao advertisement from a travel brochure for trials riders. Day ooe began with formal opeoiog ceremonies and the riders started in groups of (our on succeeding sections and Lhe competition began in earnesL Jerry Young, on his Triumph Cub, con· tinued his absolute domination of the Lightweight Expert class and rode the Modern Expert section lines to create more of a challenge for himsell Crajg Klech, on a BSA B44, and Bill Galloway, on a Greeves, rode the conventional Lightweight Expert lines and were chal· lengers to Jerry throughout the day on points lost. . The Lightweight IntermedUte class was a raging baule between Kevin Hillard, on a BSA CI5, Warren Kleis, on a Triumph Cub, and· Brad Eaton, 00 a BSA B44. These riders are pretty evenly matched in both bike and rider combination and are a definte spttl:3.tor draw lor the balance 01 the series. Modern Exp<:rlS is becoming the personal stomping ground 01 Dave and Jason Mankey (a lather and son combination) that manage to effortlessly combine both modern and traditional trials riding techniques into a smooth, technically perfect vintage trials riding style. The seasoned maturity 01 Dave Mankey is offset by the sheer exuberance 01 Jason Mankey in each section and the two of them are a rolling spectator show by themselves. The youngest rider in the event was Jason Vansickle, on a Yamaha TY80, and at II years old, Vansickle can compete effectively against riders in the Intermediate ranks. Day two began with no dropouts in any 01 the leaderboard riders and the I I sections were to ~ ridden twice. The rider standings in each class remained basically the same as the day one results. S~al commendation is in order for the Ohio Valley BSA Owner's Club both lor their pioneering efforts in Vintage Trials and specilically lor their professional standards in the organization 01 the Toronto, Ohio National.
