SACRAMENTO, CA, MAY 3
Robert "The Kid" Curry put in his best race
of the young season with'a win in the Scratch
main, while "Jammin" Jimmy Sisemore
continued his dominance in the Handicap
main event at Sacramento's Cal Expo Speedway. In Division Two action Steve Manynse
held on to win his first Division Two main
and Stacy Leduc held 0(( a late charge by John
Roltinger for a late charge by John Rolunger
for the Division Three main.
As the tapes new up it was Hicks with the
ho.leshOl. Hicks got too much drive and
wheelied towards turn one. Curry was holding
his ground on the pole and when Hicks backed
off to get his tire down, Curry inched ahead.
With Curry and Hicks in a battle through
the turn, Robinson tried to slip inside and
snake ahead out of the second corner. Hicks
held a slim lead starting down the back
straight, but Curry was still firmly on the
inside. Robinson could not ~t the needed
traction and slipped back a bike length. On
the next lap Curry shot past Hicks down the
back chute and took the lead for good as they
battled through the far comer. Robinson put
the pressure on Hicks on the next lap but
Hicks held off the charge. Robinson tried the
outside and without a cushion fen back to
fourth as Venables went past on the inside.
At the finish it was Curry with the win, ahead
of Hicks, Vertables and Robinson.
Sisemore's specialty seems to be the bandicap main and the "Jammer" brought home
another win from the 50 yard line.

Buddes tops Stoney
l.onesome Hare Scrambles
By Charlie Williams
COLUMBUS, IN, APR. 30
Tom Buckles from Knightstown, Indiana,
took first overall at round two of the Stoney
Lonesome Hare Scrambles Series. This was
not an easy win for Buckles. He was back after
nearly a year layoff with a badly broken arm
from a motocross accident last May.
Firtishing minutes behind Buckles, was a
tree-way fight decided just a mile from the
finish. Bryan Stoughton caught second place
Brian Walker when Walker took a longer but
safer line around a rutted, off-eamber uphill,
Stoughton made his move to pass Walker by
taking the more difficult but faster line
straight up the hill. Stoughton missed at his
attempt and was forced to drag his bike back
down the hill to try a~in. Ben BreedJove
passed Stoughton for third overall while he
was down. Stoughton finished in fourth place,
claiming valuable overall points.
The course was a mess, heavy rains throul{hout the week left the grounds saturated WIth
water. It took the overall riders two hours to
finish five laps of the SA-mile course. That
works out to about L3.S mph speed average
for the race. Eighty riders w= still racing
at the end.
Fine trophies and contingency prizes from
Golden Spectro Racing Oil, Malcolm Smith,
Old Bobs and Stoughton Cycle were passed
out to some very weary riders.

gas than he estimated, forcing him to add his
spare quan with still another seven miles of
racing to go.
"Luckily I had a little gas with me when
I ran out," said the KTM America/Hi-Point!
Metzeler/Maxima/AraiiScott USAIZ Racing/Acerbis/F&:L Racing Fuel/Sun Linesponsored Smith. "I was able to make it to
the last check. The Invaders were nice enough
to gi ve me some gas. "
As many miles as Smith has covered racing
for several years in the Reed Mountain area,
the Invaders were able to surprise him with
some unfamiliar terrain.
Smith was closely followed at the end of
the bomb run by Ron Shuler aboard a
Kawasaki. Shuler bad just edged out ATKmounted Eric Hallgath. Next on the scene
trying to find the marked trail through the
thick dust were Kawasaki pilots Derrick
Paiemment, Roger Hurd and Cliff Thomas
riding on a Yamaha
"I kept thinking, 'I can catch him, I can
catch him:" said Shuler. "But after every tum,
Dan was farther ahead."
Smith bad padded that lead to nearly twoand-a-baI[ minutes at the end of the first loop.
Shuler hung on to second place with Hurd
and Thomas rtipping at his heels through p'it
row. Not far behind w= Vet riders Mike
Sixbery, on a 250cc Yamaha, and Mike
McDonald, riding an Open Honda. Hallgath
ended his race part way throu~h the first loop
when a rock punched a hole 10 his transmission case.
Shuler continued intO' the second loop
pursuing the elusive Smith, while Hurd and
Thomas jammed out of the pits together with
Thomas' 490cc gaining the upper hand over
Hurd's 250cc bike.
Shuler pressed on through the more
technical second loop, unaware that it was
Thomas who was dogging him.
"I kept going fast looking behind me [or
Hurd," said Shuler. "Then I realized, 'Oh,
no, it's Thomasl'"
Thomas had been staying in Shuler's dust
for 30 miles, until both ended off course.
Thomas found the marked trail first, snatching second place away from Shuler. Althou~h
he was now dear of the dust, Thomas sull
couldn't sight the leader, Smith, who was far
ahead of the rest of the pack.
Thomas was secood to cross the finish line.
Shuler cruised in for third place. while
Hurd survived breaking his front brake lever
when he fell in the rocks, to take a fourth
overall and first 2SOcc.
The two leading Vet riders diced back and
forth throughout the 46 miles and nearly oneand-a-haJf hours of the second loop until
Sixbery got a flat, allowing McDonald to take
the Vet win and fifth o.verall. Sixbery hung
on to sixth place and won his Vet 250cc class.
