Springfield Half M'Ie win to Morehead By Bert lit Deenne Shepard 38 SPRINGFIELD, OH, APR. ~O "We may be here testing, but believe me we are racing'" said veteran Steve Morehead after he had won the Springfield Half Mile, the Ohio dirt track season opener. Fellow Ohioan George Roeder applied all the pressure Morehead cared for but had to settle for second. Freshman Harley-Davidson team member Kevin Athenon, riding a 600, finished third after a race-long battle with Dan Ingram. Larry Pegram topped the Junior division and Canadian Steve Beattie earned top honors in the Pro-Am class. With the Clark County Fairground half mile oval in near perfect condition, practice yielded lap times within striking dislance of Scott Parker's 1981 track record of 25.089 seconds. But when time trials started the course had lost some of its speed. Morehead kept the Sponseller Racing/KKIBeIl/John Dragoo/Indy Fuels/Outerwear-sponsored Honda headed in the proper direction for the only sub-26-second tour at 25.966. Ingram was second fastest and Roeder third. The Juniors were beaded by Pegram and a 27.~75 effort. The Pro-Am heats produced some names and a face from the past. Jess Roeder, the youngest of the Racing Roeders, won the first heat. Canadians Beattie and Scott SehI won the next. two heats, respectively. The fourth and final heat was won by former National number 82 Jack Warren. Scott Buchan, Steve Marth and Brian Duncan won the Junior heats. Team Sponseller pilots Morehead and Ingram won the Expert heats. George Roeder and Donnie Estep chased Morehead in the first heat but had to settle for second and third, respectively, with Darren Erichsen laking fourth in front of Real Hart and Donnie Martin. Seventh place and the right to be first alternate went to David Rayburn. The second heat saw Kevin Atherton and Chris Evans finish behind Ingram with Scott Slump, Doug Davis and Martin Lavoie picking up the remaining transfers to the malO. Semis were in order for the Junior and ProAm racers. Ian Segedy and Brent Armbruster earned their tickets to the Pro-Am main in the first semi, and Mark Butler and Aaron Crockett picked up their tickets in the second Pro-Am semi. Russ Crawford and Danny Koelsch won the Junior semis, while runnerups David Rabinetle and George Haas filled out the field for the main. Canadian Beattie, who said that in his country he is an Expert in the 600 and 750cc classes, dominated the Pro-Am main on his John Parker/1M Leathers/Shoei/Championl M8cD-sponsored Wood-Rolax. While Beattie was doing his thing up front, heated racing was taking place behind him. Second eventually went 10 Jess Roeder, but he had to fight with Jack Wanen to secure that position by the seventh lap of the IO-lap race. Harold Dorsey took third after turmng in a comefrom-behind charge after survivmg· a wheelie off the line that had him 'bringing up the rear of the pack at the stan of the race. The Junior main required a restart after three riders tangled on the first green light. Then another restart was called for when two riders, Dave Reeves and Russ Crawford, went down in tum one on the second lap. The third time was the charm and from the outside pole position, Larry Pegram took the KK Motor· cycle Supply/Arai/Smitty's H-DlTsubaki/ Riley's Cycle/PJ·I/MJ USA/Mike Camphouse/Jeff Chisam Wood·RolaX to the front and kept it there throughout the Io-Ial' race. Just as had occured in the Pro-Am maIn, the heated racing took place for the place and show positions that eventually went to Scott Buc1Jan and Steve Harth, respectively. The Expen main saw Morehead lead from stan-to-finish. George Roeder turned in an excellent ride to keep Morehead honest, but had to settle for second. Third went to Atherton after he and Ingram diced for the spot in a crowd-pleasing battle. Morehead was joined in winner's circle by his wife Cindy and new baby daughter Katie. The trio celebrated brief)y before heading back to their hometown, Findlay, Cor a night sprint car race. R....1t8 EX: 1. S..... Mar.heod IHon~ 2. George Roeder IH-DI; 3. Kevin Athenan (W·R); 4. Butch McElroy aces Amherst MX By Peggy Adamic AMHERST, OH, APR. ~ Cagiva-mounted Brian McElroy powered his way to the overall win in the combined 125/ 250cc Expert class, chalking up ~-I moto finishes as the Amherst Meadowlarks MC Club hosted the CRA·sanctionedrace with 182 riders competing. Marcus Sellards pull'ed the holeshotto start moto one, with Ron Dunfee, Harold Robison and John Shay on his rear wheel. By the end of lap one, Dunfee, Robison, Shay and Bryan Jones had all passed Sellards. Shay put his Suzuki to work and within the next two laps, took over the top spot from Dunfee. Sellards moved back around Jones and Robison toward the front lines with McElroy in tow. By mid·race, McElroy had passed Sellards to grab third place. Shay held a four-second lead on Dunfee at the checkered Oag with McElroy, , Sellards and Jones following. Shay took the lead oll the line to begin moto two with Jones, Sellards and Dunfee behind. Hart, Dally devour A'banySX By Cley Light ALBANY, OR, APR. 29 Grayson Hart rode his Suzuki (0 convincing 1·1 wins to earn the Portland-area speedster an overall win in the 250cc Pro class during Motocross Northwest-sanctioned supercrosa racing at Albany Supercross. Also picking up Pro class wins were Jeff Daily, riding a Yamaha, winner of the 125cc class, and Honda-jockey Ron Sun, winner of a likewise thrilling ~O·40 Pro class. Hart returned 10 Albany for what he called "practice", and had a relatively easy time wrapping up the overall win with the exception of a moto two battle with Daily, again Yamaha·mounted. Hart beat Kawasaki riders Gary Beyer and Kenny Olsen in the first mow. ~ Daily jumped out front of molO two and held Hart at bay for several laps before he slid out and ""rt, who was hot on his heels, got past and rode the remaining three laps alone out front to finalize his I-I sweep. Da!ly remounted for second with Suzuki rider Don Bisceglia, who finished fourth in molO one, taking third ahead of Olsen, Dennis Sweeten. Beyer and Sun, also the overall order of finish. "I just came down for some practice," said Hart who was riding with a knee injury, "I did, though, end up riding harder than I wanted to in the second molO. That Daily guy is pretty fast." Daily did a similar disappearing act in the 125cc Pro class. Daily's closest competition in the class was teammate Olsen, riding a Kawasaki, and Bisceglia. Bisceglia, rapidly progressing as one of Oregon's lOp 125cc Pro riders, had dismal luck in the first outing and therefore was not 10 contention for a top overall placing, allowing Olsen to use 2·~ rides to net second place . payoff ahead of Yamaha rider Dan Gregory (5·4).
