That all Motorsports appear·ed together at once, to celebrate the approach of Summer. We were at a California lake called . Lower Castaic, where drag boats run those low ETs out on the Liquid Quarter Mile. It was a time of high rooster tails and blower whine. And of exhibition Jet-Skiing, and skydivers, too. And hot rods and custom cars everywhere along the park's grassy shores. And, yeah, Motorcycles! - a whole special show of Harley-Davidsons. We had 'em all! Everybody! From land, sea, and air! Our U.S. GP television director Mark Gleckl waded to his waist in out-ramp water, filming the boat drivers after they won or lost. Bobby Unser Jr. was on the TV mike, alongside drag boating's voice, "Jf" Johnson. While Bobby's "Uncle Louie" Unser watched from his wheelchair up on the hill. Craig Breedlove had a model of his future , ' speed-record boat. He was talking with the Capaldis, champion drag boaters Ray and son Tim, out of their blown alcohol hydros and flats, in the saddles of their brand new Harleys. And I was on the phone to Randy Mamola, to hear all about his team's Rich Oliver's Road Atlanta win. What a cornucopia of racing! A veritable Congress of Motor Minds! Drag Boats International's competition boomed across the water -in a show that seemed to pull everything together over that warm spring weekend. And it made me think about our whole spectrum of motorsport, and what gives Internal CombUstion its right to possess our souls. To create Our Big Dream of Motor Mastery! And when I held that broken rod end direct from Tim Capaldi's boat, and felt the heat still in it, I was in a sense touching the fire of creation itself. And it sticks with me, and always will. It's. that love-of-motor-things that grabs us and never lets go. It's in our bloodstream, sure. It's in each cell and every mystery of our being. And we are reminded of it everywhere we go - that music of engine power, that sound of our own hearts at work. Now we're heading for Indy. Randy's off to Misano. Bubba's home again and talking to friends. It is all so vast and varied. Our motor wo.rld is promethean, and yet individually ours.
