BY'P4I'P4I Wf4lLfY Bubba Shobert, who suffered a head injury in a post-race collision with Kevin Magee at the April 16 U.S. GP at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, (,:alifornia, left the San Jose Medical Center On Friday, May 5, and flew in a jet-air ambulance provided by American Honda to Lubbock, Texas, where he will recuperate in a rehabilitation center. hobert, who live in Carmel Valley, California, was originally from Lubbock and his parents till live there. Don hobert, Bubba's fa,ther, said, "We're moving Bubba so that he can be close 10 the family while he recovers. The San Jose Medical Center has been super. I have nothing but praise for the hospital and the staff." According to Cabin Racing Team public relations director Rick Spillman, "Bubba is showing remarkable progress_ Shobert began mobilization therapy before leaving the an Jose Medical Center, sitting up in a chair for a few moments each day. Brit Rob McElnea has been named as the rider who will fill in for Bubba Shobert in upcoming GPs on the Cabin Racing Team Honda NSR500, beginning with the May 14 Italian round of the World Championship Road Race Series in Misano. McElnea, 28, was Kevin Schwantz's teammate on the Pepsi Suzuki GP road race team last year, but was let go at the end of the season after finishing 10th in the championship. McElnea was unable to find a GP ride for '89 and the last race he competed in was the April 30 Hungarian round of the World Championship Superbike Series where he finished fourth in the first leg and third in the second leg. McElnea practiced on the Cabin Racing Team's 1988 NSR500 at the Misano circuit in Italy last week. 2 Americans Mike Healey (KTM) and Trampas Parker (KTM) finished first and second overall, respectively, in the fourth round of the World Champion hip l25cc MX Series in Oss, Holland, May 7. Healey won the opening moto and finished second in the final moto, while Parker went 3-1. Third place went to series points leader Davey Strijbos (Suz) from Holland, who was 2-3 on the day. Rounding out the top· five were Holland's Marcel Van Drunen (H:on) and American Bobby Moore (KTM). Strijbos leads the series with 138 points, followed by Parker with 133 and Italian Alessandro Puzar ( uz) with 113. Healey is fourth with 84 points. In the second round of the World Championship 250cc MX Series in Sittendorf, Austria, May 7, Italian Michele Fanton (Suz) scored the overall victory with 13 moto finishes. Second place went to American Broc Glover (KTM) who went 8-2, while third went to Holland's Gert Jan Van Doorn (Suz) witb a 3-9 score. Frenchman Jean-Michel Bayle (Hon) and Britain's Jeremy Whatley (Suz) rounded outthe top five. Fanton leads the series point standings over Whatfay, 60-56. Belgian Eric Geboers (I-Ion) scored the overall victory in the fourth round of the World Championship 500cc MX Series in Fermo, Italy, May 7._The defending 500cc World Champion went 1-2, topping Great Britain's Dave Thorpe (Hon), who posted 5-1 moto finishes. Third overall was taken by Brit Kurt Nicoll (Kaw) with a 3-3 tally. Australian Jeff Leisk (Hon) captured fourth, via 24 moto finishes. Geboers and Thorpe are now tied for the series points lead with 120 points each. Nicoll is third with 91. The Human Race Team's (Yam) Kurt Hall and Andy Fenwick completed 193 laps to win the fourth round of the WERAIEBC Brakes Endurance Road Race Series, a six-hour event held at Rosamond, California's Willow Springs International Raceway on May 6. BMR Motorsports (Suz) finished second with 3-0 Racing (Suz) third overall. Chuck Graves (Suz) won the first round of me WERA Formula USA National Road Race Series at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, "California, on May 7. Graves topped Barry Burke (Yam) and Kurt Hall (Yam). Kevin Hines (KTM) captured the overall win in round four of the AMA National Championship Enduro Series in Traverse City, Michigan, May 7. Second place went to Kurt Hough (Kaw), while defending National Champion Randy Hawkins (Suz) took third. Tyson Vohland (Kaw) was the 250cc Ultracross winner at round six of the Mickey Thompson Off Road Championship Gran Prix Series in Pasadena, California, May 6.
