Schwartz storms to Ascot Speedway victory By Scott Daloisio 34 GARDENA, CA, APR. 6 For "Boogaloo" Bobby Schwartz, it was business as usual at Chris Agajanian's Ascot South Bay Stadium season opener. The biggest winner in the track's history, ran roughshod over the ·competition and swept the Scratch side of the program. Schwartz had a rough draw for the main when he pulled gate three. As soon as the tapes went up, he steered the en Brace/STP/ Silkolene/BelVMalcolm Smith WesLiake into the lead. Steve Lucero, the 1988 National Champion, chased Schwartz off the line with Scott Brant and Mike Faria close behind. Faria took Brant for third and went after roommate Lucero. As the race reached lhe halfway point. they began to batLie for the number twO position. Schwartz, with a two length lead, rode the high groove. He wheelied near the end of lap two, but recovered before the competition could put a dent into his advantage. Faria charged Lucero on the final lap. He tried to force his Team Scopelitte Godden inside Lucero in tum three. The National Champion held him back. As they came off tum four, Faria hooked up, got the drive and took second spot away. He was srill two lengths shy of winner Schwartz. Like the Handicap main at Victorville four days earlier, South Bay Stadium's Handicap main was rough. The wildest incident came when Charles Ermolenko rammed Steve Russell in tum two. Russell slammed head on into the wall and broke out two panels. He got up, but was suffering from injuries to his wriSt, ribs and a cut and bruised cheekbone. All of this came less than 48 hours before his wedding. In addition, his bike was dead on arrival. Russell did not make the restart. Ermolenko received a 40 yard penalty. That meant 30 yard line starters Brant, Sbawn McConnell, Jim Sisemore and Greg Hancock would be battling for the initial lead. Hancock, on a Weslake, took the early lead ahead of BranL Phil Collins and Lucero made their way through the pack and sneaked by Brant at the end of the ftfst lap. That put them in third and fourth. Collins, making use of the outside dirt, pushed McConnell back to third at the end of lap two. When Hancock slid out and went down in turn two a few seconds later, Collins took over possession of the poinL With the crowd cheering him on, Collins rode the Rovazzirti Electric/STP/JT Racing USA Weslake away from the pack. He notched the win with room to spare. McConnell, who leaned in on Sisemore on the last lap, took second. Sisemore came home third with Lucero fourth. 'On the third lap Stratton banzied down the hill and slid sideways past leader Lykens. Next Gardner bobbled in a turn. Goodrich attacked, making a pass. Steadily he gained ground on Gardner. All this time, David Burnett was moving up through the pack. On the fifth lap he caught and passed Gardner. The moLO ended with Goodnch third over Burnett and Gardner. In maLO two Strauon was lhe leader out of turn one. Behind was Gardner and Lykens. Lykens was out after the first lap leaving Gardner in third ahead of David Burnett. By Greg Nelson LISLE, NY, APR. 9 Erranc weather gave a true test in riding talent at Broome-Tioga's MX season opener. This time his seat stayed put. Behind hIm Robert Laman rode wire to wire in second. Ted Robinson rode from a midpack Start to finish third. This was all he needed to earn the overall. "'.gan manhandles Roseburg "'X By CIJty Ught ROSEBURG, OR, APR. 8 Suzuki-mounted Ron Milligan brought a pair of RMs to Roseburg and at the completion of the day's program had won two classes at the second race of the Clark's Branch Raceway MotQCfosS Series. In the 125cc class Milligan, the lone pro rider, ran combined with a good-sized field fo Junior/Intermediate class competitors and had a relatively easy time riding to a first moLO win. As Milligan breezed to a win in the first moLO, a battle waged behind between intermediates Kip Mast, Kevin Yeager, Chad Berry and Terry Russ. Berry, sponsored by Yamaha! Honda of Roseburg, worked his way to the head of the Intermediate pack to forge a win over Masl and Russ al moLO's end. Paiement claims Boner Run H&H win By Donnetta and Bob Murray RED MOUNTAIN, CA, APR. 9 Unseasonably high temperatures didn't hamper Derrick Paiement's performance as he led wire-to-wire in the Rover's 15th Annual Boner Run Hare & Hound held at Teagle Wash near Red Mountain. "I like the heat, I live out here," said Ridgecrest resident Paiement of the 105 degree temperature. A shon bomb run had the riders drag racing to the marked trail. Paiement, aboard a Kawasaki 500, Ron Shuler (also on a KX500) and 406 ATK-mounted Eric HaUgath reached the trail together with Paiement grabbing the lead, followed by Shuler and Hallgath. Next rider to emerge from the cloud of dust was Amateur rider Bryan Holmes. The 42 miles of the first loop featured an open fast course which spread out the competitors, dust being a major factor in the hot, still air. . Paiement had nearly a two-and-a-half minute lead entering pit row. Yamaha's Cliff Thomas overcame a bad stan and a richrunning engine to claim the second place sial by the end of the first loop. Thomas had passed Shuler when Shuler nussed a turn and lost the course temporarily. Shuler quickly found his way and was third into the pits. Fast gas pits helped Suzuki pilot Scott Stearns leave pit row and onto the second loop seconds before John Rudder, who had been ahead of Steams. Hallgath limped into the pits with motor problems, ending his race. The second loop provided a much more technical ride for the panicipanlS. Heal was starting to affect most of the riders as they tried to pick their way through rocks, tight trails and treacherous uphills and downhills. "The first loop was perfect," said the Downhill Suspension/JME Racing/Scott USAfAnswer ProductslDad-sponsored Paiement at the finish chute. "I didn't like the rocks on the second loop. I thought Cliff (Thomas) would get me in the rocks, but he didn't and it was smooth going from there on." He crossed the checkered flag nearly three minutes ahead of second place Thomas. The duo had recenLiy teamed together to win the Viewfinder. team race beld Easter Saturday. The heat proved to be Thomas' nemesis in the second loop. "I went out charging, trying to catch Derrick," said Thomas. "Then the heat got to me and I started getting sick. I just kept an even pace so I could stay in second and finish good. The course was laid out well, only there were way too many whoop-dedoos." Part way into the second section of the course, Shuler took a detour down into a canyon. "I was making a left-hand tum when I hit a rock," said Shuler. '1 had my hand on the brake, but I was committed to going downhill." . "Years of experience said to keep my eyes on the trail," said Steams, who watched Shuler. slowly sl1de off the goat trail on his
