2201 Chaign, a visible improvement
was accomplished in a scenic portion
of Highway 78 at Heflin Mountain
and the Talladega Scenic Drive.
Talladega National Forest and Alabama benefited from your combined
efforts and desire to improve the litter
and trash situation that is so evident
throughout the area. The repainting
of the guardrail at Horseblock
Mountain overlook and the immense
garbage picked up there has ma~e
a
significant difference In
appearance.
Approximately three tons of trash
was picked up by almost 100 volunteers that day.
.
The positive comments throughout the community toward the
American Motorcyclist Association
(AMA) efforts has generated a positive feeling among local individuals
and groups in the area.
Through your desire and concern
to improve the appearance of the
Talladega National Forest, once
again, I thank you for your successful,
effort.

Helmet holder
In response to Claudia Riggert's
letter in the April 12 issue of Cycle
News regarding Diane Polen, I
would like to educate her on a few
things.
First of all, if you think for one
minute that Diane merely "holds
Doug's helmet," etc., you are dead
wrong. Diane does not need to hang
around a privateer's pits to know
what "real" support is. She has more
I than paid her dues. Diane has well
over 10 years involvement in racing,
including working with registration
and scoring for Central Road Racing
Club in Texas in the late 1970s. She
has stood by and supported Doug
throughout his privateer years as an
unknown, doing all of the things
. that you mentioned that make her
a "real supporter" and then some.
The fact that Doug has become a
recognized and successful racer does
not leave her merely holding his
helmet. She still handles his bookkeeping, accounting, travel arrangements and anything else he needs.
And she really enjoys itl Because of
Doug's success, she no longer 'has to
do the "dirty work," as he has others
doing that for him now. That comes
with success and if your husband has
that same success someday, I'm sure
that you wiJI no longer do the "dirty
work" either.
On the other hand, I've seen the
majority of racers with partners that
are either non-supportive or disapprove of their racing or they bilCh
and raise so much hell at them at
the race track, that they wind up not
being able to concentrate on racing
and wind up crashing or doing
badly. Doug Polen and your husband are fortunate to have supportive, caring and loving wives.
Finally, William Edgar's article
was about Doug Polen, not Diane.
I applaud the fact that he evc;n
mentioned Diane for her role In
Doug's racing. Maybe someday you
will be in her position and will
appreciate someone giving you a
little credit for your husband's
accomplishments.

The day after the April 12 issue went
to press, we received a letter from
Claudia Riggert asking us not to
print her letter, in Riggert's words
"out of respect for Mrs. Polen."
