That they were coming home to California, and it was the best of times again. How grand it was over there at The Opener, there in Japan with our flags on the rostrum - three Stars&-Stripes above Schwantz and Rainey and Lawson, as our anthem played. And played for Kocinski, too! Then it was Rainey again in Australia, second to Gardner, to lead the 500 series and bring it here. To these Monterey hills, to our groves of live oak andjamiliar ground. To Laguna Seca! That magical name again! That Mecca! And, like a dream now, at Suzuka Circuit not long ago they were having a party for one of Laguna's home riders, Jimmy Filice. That 1988 USGP 250 winner and his wife Jamie were there·in Japan doing their thing - for the rain-soaked press and proud new sponsors, for the video cameras and Jim's handshaking fans. And I stopped to ask myself, "What does this all really have to do with the reality of motorcycle road racingr" And my own answer was simple.. And quick. It Makes It Happen! - that's·what. As .sure as fuel in the intakes turns the engine and wheel. All of these banners and flashing strobe lights, all the press kit goodies and sponsors' leggy young models - THIS is the stuff that allows us to race. To get it on, on the track. And I looked over at him, at San Jose's Jimbo. Above his fidgety smile, Filice's eyes were moist. Yeah! And mine, too! It was one of those moments where the raw fruth of life wells up and comes to the surface. It was all so very clear as to why we were there. Jim didn't even need to say what he did, but did anyway "You have to want it inside." It was so evident in his look, in his stance, even in the way he breathed, in· everything about him. It's that restless urge that the true rider has. Jim here, and then another home track Laguna Seca Man - Mamola. Randy's every move charged wilh the passion to win. These are our guys, our Americans. Coming home now on the way to Europe. Coming for their brief encounters on this nalive land. What a fine treat it will be. What superb music for our motorcyclist's soul.
